Just received my first order from MPIX... and its terrible.

Postby VibrantMindDance » Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:45 am

:( :( :( I decided to finally go ahead and get a print done to see how it would come out, since I've never callibrated my monitor. I went to MPIX and i'm pretty sure i chose to not have them color correct it. Anyway, I got the photo today and its terrible. It's too dark and has a very yellow/warm cast to it, nothing like what my monitor is showing me. I'm very bummed about this.

So my question is this. When I get my new laptop, a sony VAIO, and calibrate it with my Huey Pantone (unfortunately it wouldnt work on this monitor), are all of my photos going to look terrible and need to be reprocessed/color corrected? :( :( :(

Any help or thoughts or suggestions on this sad sad dilemma would be appreciated...

First of all: what does the photo look like in your monitor?

The photo is saturated and vibrant on my monitor... nicely exposed and contrasted. The print is yellowish, dull and dark. The hue of the colors even seems very different. My monitor makes it seem much more lively and deep where as the print seems shallow.

Ok. So, most likely you edited your photo on your monitor, which is not calibrated, so the photo will only look that way on your monitor, it will be very different on any other monitor and therefore printer. Working with a non calibrated monitor I would ask for color correction so that the print will reflect better colors independent of your monitor. Welcome to the headaches of digital photography.

Ah. Ok. Strange though because what my monitor shows is much much closer to what the LCD on my camera shows me. So... when I get my new laptop and calibrate that monitor, i'm going to have to get used to the pictures looking a lot less... appealing?

Maybe you should post the offending pic here so we can see what it looks like on our monitors. Maybe they just did a crappy job of printing it. :?:

Beautiful images. Colors seem to be fine on my screen. I would contact Customer Service at MPIX and explain the problem. I'm sure they'll help you. You might even point them to this thread.

Thanks so much Luca. You've shed some positive light on my dilemma. I hope its someone elses fault for once ;) And thanks for the positive feedback on my images. It's frustrating to finally see some progress in your actual photo taking skills, only to realize you cant do anything but post them on flickr.

I agree. If I had prints come back with color like that, there would be no complaints. :D

You should read the forum at Mpix.com There is a large discussion about prints comming back with yellowish cast. I'm not sure what's been done about it, but I read a bit there a couple months ago.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to contact MPIX because I received my new Eye-One Display 2 system and when I calibrated my monitor, it was such a minimal difference from what my screen originally was. I'm beginning to think my calibration was not the issue. Thanks for all the help. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks Caleb for pointing me in the mpix forum direction, i'm headed there now!
