Adobe Premiere Elements costs $139.99 (but you can find it for less) and has tons of useful features.
You can download a full working trial and use it for a month. If you have a previous version the upgrade is $79

I contacted Adobe and was told the type of video format from the Canon 5D was not compatible with Adobe Premiere Elements. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Ok, so although the video out of the 5D Mark II is standard HD and encapsulated into a .mov file, Adobe Premiere Elements does not have the codecs, sorry for stating the opposite, I thought it did.

I found a thread that might be helpful:

Check the answer by rgphoto70, he gives a pretty nice solution. On my PC I have not noticed any of the flickering problems they mention, I do have a pretty powerful graphic card with 1GB of RAM though.

I bought a 5D Mk II three weeks and am currently evaluating 3 video editors; Adobe Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas Platinum and Corel VideoStudio.

I have just about ruled out keeping Premiere elements as it seems the least capable, although fairly simple to use. Once you've saved the video project (movie) once it won't let you save it again in a different file format or burn to disc. Very annoying.

I have 3 major programs for working video (Which BTW is like learning photography all over).

I'll mention two of them. I have Adobe premier Pro CS3. It will not read the files either but that's not unusual. There are a couple of ways to work around that and the easiest is convert them. Then you get into other issues and asking about the best converters is like asking which rifle is best for Deer. It's guaranteed to start a fight as some are more lossy than others.
Premier Pro is an extremely powerful editor though.
Quite often with theses high end editors you wind up working with proxy files anyway.

I will mention Vegas only to say I didn't care for it.

The other and I like it better each time I use it, Is Pinnacle Ultimate Collection. There are issues with it and it is not as powerful or professional as Adobe or Vegas...but it is VERY user friendly (to a point) and you have Avid support and platform which is the standard with the film industry.
Pinnacle does crash. It is a resource hog and will periodically crash on the best machine.

It's Codecs are good and it reads a wide variety of formats.
That said...a lot of people do not like Pinnacle.
