Good telephoto in 200 - 400/600 range

Postby bvanzant » Sun Jul 22, 2007 6:28 pm

I will be in the market for a telephoto lens from 200 - 600 (at the high end) for a trip to the Tetons in Feb. '08. Nothing that is outrageously expensive (like Canon lense). It will go on a Canon XTi. Any suggestions or reviews to look over would be helpful.

Brian,

If this is going to be for one specific trip, have you considered renting one? There is a gentleman here in Memphis that has a lens rental business and his prices seem reasonable:
http://www.lensrentals.com/

If you're going on a once in a lifetime trip, it may be worthwhile to go with a top of the line lens rather than missing photo opportunities that may never be available to you again.

Just a thought, but if that's not something you'd like to try, could you give us an idea of your budget?

I agree with Bob, you could get a long range lens that you could afford, but more then likely you'll be upset or dissapointed with the slow speed and poor quality of glass.

If it's a once in a lifetime trip, rent a high dollar one and you'll be so impressed, you'll probably end up buying it :D

If you dont want to rent one, let us know what your budget is, and I'm sure a few suggestions will come rolling in. You have quite some time to decide, or save up.

Thanks Bob and Pat for the weblink and advise. I never knew such a place even existed. I just may have to use his services. I have been doing some research on lenses and have come to the realization that I will have to save a little longer to get a quality lens. I am fairly new to digital and I can already tell that I am very particular about my shots. I think it would pay off in the long run to go with quality. In an unrelated matter, How do I get some photo's on the forum to get crititqued? I don't have a web page, they are just on my hard drive. Thanks again fellows, you all have been helpful.

Bob and Pat,

To answer your question to me about my price range... I am thinking not more than 2,500.00

My wife will probably skin me alive for that  ...oh well. boys and their toys.[/img]

Has anyone here used this online lens rental place? Any good experiences or bad experiences? I am very intrigued by it.

They sell some of their used lenses after getting them re-calibrated at the manufacturer (at least, that is what they say they do). Has anyone purchased used lenses from them? If so, how was your experience?

Thanks,
Tobyn

Tobyn,

I recommended trying them, but I haven't had a reason to try them yet. Roger is a moderator and forum leader on the Memphis photography site and he will loan local members lenses for free. He was a one man shop, but I think he may have hired a part-timer to help him out. His business is really growing. I don't think you'll have any problems with him. Here's a link to the Memphis forum if you'd like to pose any questions about him to the local people. I just joined a week or so ago, so I can just offer my opinion.

Hey Tobyn, in reguards to your posting a picture on the site question, just sing up on the Photobucket site, and upload your pictures on there.

Once you ahve your pictures hosted there, they will give you a few different links to choose from depending on where you're posting them. Copy the link, and paste it in the message body on the forum and the picture will pop up when viewed on the site.

THe first time might be a little trial and error, but it becomes very fast and easy after about the third time :D

Good Luck, cant wait to see some of your shots
