Pat... Im happy with the Sigma 50/500. I was using it at dusk and dawn to photograph wolves. I had the ISO set up to 800... I prob could have went higher.... but photographing those majestic creatures has always been a dream of mine.. and I didn't want to worry bout noise.

Terry B., that Grizz shot is beautiful! Really, really cool!

Luca, thanks for the clarification on the NG comment, I was a little confused. :-)

I still haven't made a decision, lack of funds helps to slow that process.
But my husband grabbed my camera tonight to shoot a hawk who was eating in a tree in our backyard (our yard opens to a creek/wooded area) and he said, after trying to shoot with my 28-135 IS, "man, you really need a bigger zoom lens!"

Indeed.

I know what you mean. After visiting Luca in Jackson Hole, we met a photographer that was shooting with a 600mm Canon prime lens.

Cindy took one look through the lens and talked about it for days afterwards. On our drive bck to Michigan, she said to me "If there is one thing we buy this summer, it is going to be one of those lenses!"

I about crapped my pants when I heard her say that. She said "I dont care what you ahve to do, but make enough money this summer to buy one of those lenses before we leave to go back out west next winter."

I joked with Luca saying that I should have introduced her to some pros years ago and let her fool around with their gear.

Now I just need to figure out how to make money...LOL

I say "Money can buy better pictures!" :D

I know that for sure! Show me a top pro using some budget lens on safari or shooting sports photography with some P&S camera. Money buys better images and is the main reason so many of us are sitting here trying to figure out how to make it and not out shooting.

Yes, Pat. However, you do need to know how to use the expensive gear before you cen get those better photos. I used my cheap lenses for a couple of years before I even could notice the difference between good glass and the cheap stuff. Now I am an addict  Where do I go from here? My wish list is too long for my budget!

Yeah, I agree with you Caleb. The best gear on earth isnt going to guarantee you a cover shot, you do need to know what you're doing with those expensive lenses.

I was just trying to say that this is the one time where the more you spend, the more it shows in the quality of end product

Hi Stephanie, I have been going through the same thing for a few years what I did is got a Tamron 200-400mm f5.6 until I got the money for a canon 100-400mm IS L (just got it last week not even had it out of the box yet) I am surprised that I did not see anyone say anything about the Tamron 200-400 I think it is the best over 300mm lens you can get for the money, I have used mine for two or three years and have really liked it. I am thinking about selling mine soon and I checked around it looks like it should go for around $250 and I am pretty sure you can use a canon 2x teleaconverter on (you might check me on that) but I know I have used a Phoenix 2x converter on DO NOT wast your $$ on a cheep converter get a Canon or Tamron SP. The other two you might look at is Tamron 200-500mm f6.3 for around $850 ( if I was going to spend that much I would save up for the Canon) or the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 $700 and I guess you could use a good converter on it and make it 140-400mm f5.6.
I hope this helps
p.s. cool bear pic even if it looks far away at least you where there to see one.

I am photographer as a profession. i bought Canon EOS 40D camera. this is really a good camera i ever used. it has 135 mm lens & very nice optical zoom with 4.8 x. furthermore, it also supports microdrive. i have read digital camera reviews from below link. it's very good site providing online reviews for free.
