Am I Being A Bit Stupid Here?

Postby Edd » Fri May 29, 2009 11:17 am

Hi all,

I've had a bit of a diaster with my Tameron 28-80mm lense.

My friends dog knocked over my camera bag and my camera and Tameron lense rolled into a puddle.

Camera is fine but the lense had some water in it, not a great amount, a few drops came out of it then it promptly misted up. I've let it dry out and the internal elements have dried out dirty, very dirty infact.

I've taken it in to be cleaned and they called today to say the lense was beyond ecomonical repair, I have asked them whilst they have it in bits to clean the element anyway and I'll have the lense back with the intention of using it.

However thinking about it today is this wise ?

Do I stand a fair chance of damaging my camera by now using this lense ?

Any opinions would be greatfully received.

Thanks in advance.

Ed

I dont think it will hurt the camera, but I dont think it will be any good if you have to spend time on each image to clear out debris or spots from inside the lens.

Might just want to chalk this one up and you now have a good reason to get some new equipment...LOL

Do you have insurance on your gear? I'm very surprised at how few people have their gear insured. I think we pay under $50 for the entire year and have a $100 deductable that includes 100% replacement

I know it saved our butt when I dumped a 1D, a 28-300 L lens, a 580EX Flash and 3 $120 batteries into the ocean after tipping over in my kayak. Had a check in the mail within a few days of filing the claim and had a new 5D a few days later.

Sorry to hear about your loss and hope you can get it resolved

Thanks Pat for the advice,

Yes the equipment is insured under my home insurance for accidential damage, however for a lense that cost less than £100 it's not really worth making a claim.

We banded around the idea of now buying the 24 - 105mm F4 L (iirc) but its just to far financially at the moment.

So I have decided to go with a 28 - 135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM that hopefully arrives on Weds. All the reports I read seemed to give good feedback about the lense, but actually finding one has been like looking for a needle in a haystack !!!!

I know all the Canon prices have jumped up this year but you just can't find the good lenses anywhere over here, one guy in a shop spoke about a european shortage of Canon glass.

Looking forward to getting it and having a play.
