Standard Zoom recommendation

Hi Guys,

I have a EOS 40D with an assortment of lenses. I want to buy a fast standard zoom but cannot decide between the EF-S 17-55, 17-40L, the equivalent Sigma or Tamron (17 (18)-50 f/2.8. Budget is a consideration as well as I hope to upgrade to a full frame body within the next 2 years.

I shoot mostly landscape, cityscapes, street portraiture - my photos tend toward photojournalistic.
