Zoom lens conundrum!!!

Postby master of none » Wed May 12, 2010 3:29 pm

I'm an amateur shutterbug and just received a Canon EOS 50D as a gift. Sweet! However, I have found myself in a quandary regarding zoom lenses. I have an old Vivitar Series 1 28-300mm f 4.0-6.3 lens but also have the lens that came with the EOS 50D which is a Canon IS 28-135mm f 3.5-5.5. I'm trying to decide if I keep both of them, or do I hock one to get a different lens. I do almost all outdoor stuff (no macro or portraits). Because the Vivitar is 77mm and the Canon is 72mm, I don't want to have to buy a bunch of accessories, filters, etc. for each lens. The Canon lens is obviously newer with more bells and whistles (like IS and ultrasonic) and is a bit faster, but the Vivitar has the extra 100mm of zoom. Unfortunately, they're the same on the wide angle end of the spectrum. Since I do quite a few landscapes, do I hock one for a wide angle? Do I get a drop-in filter system like Cokin to keep them both? Thanks so much for any advice!!

Well for what it's worth. If you wanted to sell the Vivitar, it probably ain't worth much, My guess is it's worth more to you as a shooter. If you sold the Canon lense, you sell the best one you have for what? For about $300, Canon has a 100-300 zoom lens, that's less expensive, notice how I avoided saying "cheaper", than Sigma's 100-300. That and the 28-135 that came with the camera sure cover's a lot of ground! And if you just want to go walk about, the 28-300 Vivitar covers the same range but probably not as sharply, but, your only carrying one lense. There's no reason to have a $5000 lens if you have $200 technique. I got a lot of $200 lense's! :)
