Storing My Camera

Postby Naylor77 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 10:12 am

Hello everyone my name Is Sean & I have a dilemma. At the moment my camera Is not setup & I keep missing the all Important shots because by the time I have set the camera up Its too late. Would my camera get damaged or would the lenses get ruined If I kept my camera already setup, kept It In a draw with a few of those silica gel bags. My camera Is a Canon EOS 400D with a Sigma 170-500mm zoom lens. Also Is there any manufacturer that sells a kind of sleeve which will allow you to put your camera fully setup Into It. I shall look forward to your responses.........Many thanks..

Sean.........

I know most of you will probably laugh at this, but the last thing I worry about is my camera. I'm more worried about having the set-up ready to go at any time the need arises. I always keep it in my lap while in the car with it on, but in the sleep mode. This way if I see something that I want to get a shot of, all it takes is to bring it to my eye, snap the shot and if it's something major, I stop and am ready to go.

This is the same if I'm in my kayak, on my bike or hiking in the woods. You should see the looks I get when I pull up to a stop light on my motorcycle and have a 1D hanging from my back pack shoulder straps by its Tamrac attachments.

I'm more worried about missing a shot, then hurting the camera. After 3 years and hundreds of thousands of images, I figure I've gotten my moneys worth out of the camera if anything should happen to it.

I drive around with my camera set up all the time, too. I also keep another lens ready and a lens pen waiting for the inevitable smudge. I have gotten more photos than I can mention just because I have the D70 with a 70-300 waiting. I feel like something is missing every time I pull out of the driveway on a day off without it.

You can always get it serviced is what I think (my camera has been dropped, submerged in saltwater, thrown onto the dock, subjected to negative 65F - plus 115F, and carried through heavy Alaskan brush for days and it still works).

Wow Caleb! I thought I was one of the only people out there that beat their equipment like that. Glad to know there are others who put their equipment through the tests of the real world.

I cant say enuff about the Tamrac Model N-11 Backpack camera straps for keeping the weight of the camera off of your hands and distributing it on to your shoulders while Hiking, riding motorcycles or mountain bikes. My wife had me buy her a pair after she carried the camera one afternoon on a long hike so she could carry her binoculars like that.

The last time we were getting in the water in our kayaks and the guide looked at me with a raised eyebrow asking "Are you seriously going to carry that big camera between your legs with just a ziplock bag around it?" I laughed saying "It only takes getting used to the split second avaliability of the responce time on one of these babies before you never leave home without it." Even though I have two point & shoots with underwater housings, I cant stand the lag time between hitting the shutter release and counting to five before it takes a picture.

So the Large frame 1D and my trusty 28-300 USM IS always goes with me on every drive or hike.

I figure use it to its full potential, isnt that why we spend so much money on this modern technology?
