Calling all outdoor photographers

Postby wildred0099 » Mon Jun 14, 2010 10:38 am

Hi everyone, :D

I recently purchased a Canon Rebel T2i. I have several lenses already such as Signma 50mm f/1.4, A 11-16mm wide angle lens, a 100mm macro lens and of course the kit lens that comes with it which is not so great.
I am going on a trip shortly and seems the more I read about all the different lenses the more overwhelming it is. Eventually, I will be upgrading to a full frame camera so I'm hesistant to buying things that only work for my current camera. Below is a list of lenses I am choosing between.

I'm looking for a great walk around lens that will be used on vacation to prevent having to switch out lenses as we will be on a cruise what would you recommend? Keep in mind some pictures will be taken inside without alot of natural light and no use of flash so I would like something with a low f/

Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical Macro Large Aperture Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
for both full frame and crop frame

30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM
* only for crop frame

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD Large Aperture Standard Zoom Lens for Canon Digital DSLR Camera
(only for crop frame - but it comes shipped between July 2 to July 23) Which is after our vacation.

Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC (Vibration Compensation) Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
(only for crop frame)

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
not an "L" lens but they say is very good. (only for crop)

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens
:D (for both full frame and crop frame )

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom

Thanks for your input

Sara,

I wouldn't take into consideration your future plans concerning full frame. When/if you decide to go to full frame, you shouldn't have much trouble selling your aps-c lenses.

If you have to shoot indoors without a flash (why is that not allowed?), the f/2.8 zooms are probably not going to be fast enough. You already have a 50 f/1.4, but that may be too long inside although I'd take it along.

Of the lenses you mentioned, the Canon 17-55IS would be my first choice for a walk-around lens. I have one and it does produce "L" quality shots, it's just not built like an "L".
If a flash is allowed and you bought a 580EX, I imagine you could easily get by with just that lens.

My choice of the prime lenses you mentioned, would be the Sigma 30 f/1.4. The problem with this lens is that many of them need calibration and I'm not sure you could get it back in time if calibration was needed.
