flash help

Postby oTTer » Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:21 am

Where can I find the flash accessories for shooting indoor stuff like dusty arenas, like barrel racing and indoor rodeo stuff? This guy was walking around with a big round flash and had a battery pack thing on his hip. What is that, are they interchangeable for any camera, and where do I look for one? I went to B&H or wherever, couldn't find anything similar and I might not be searching for the right thing. My camera is a pentax, could that be the problem? I didn't check Pentax's site yet, but any help would be appreciated.

Otter,

The "big round flash" is probably a ring attachment for the flash and some manufacturers make external battery attachments for their flashes - Canon's is a CP-E4. I'm not familiar with Pentax so can't offer much help with their equipment.
Hope this gives you enough info to research for your equipment.

Just as info, I hate shooting indoor equestrian events because of the lighting. Most English events wouldn't allow flashes, but the Western events normally did. I think it's because so many English horses have a lot of thoroughbred in their bloodlines and they're a little high strung. Thankfully, I haven't had to shoot any indoor events for a few years.

BTW, here's a few pics of my granddaughter riding her Moose.

This was from her last show last year

and this one is her just showing off.

Thanks, bob - I can't find anything online, I am probably asking the wrong questions. I met a guy at the horse expo that had a nikon, he had a bendy flash mounted on his camera with a battery pack. His pictures seemed to turn out ok, I don't know if I can use my mounted flash with any success or not. There's a bullriding coming up in April, I can always try!
I'm sure you're proud of that granddaughter of yours. She looks really good up there.

Otter,

Could this be what you're looking for: http://www.qtm.com/ ?

I am proud of my granddaughter. The second pic shows just how little she is compared to "Moose". She's 5' tall and 93 lbs. and he stands 6' 8" and weighs about 1,200 lbs.

Here are a couple of recent shots of them getting ready for show season.
