Best archival DVDs for photos

Postby VibrantMindDance » Tue Jun 17, 2008 4:27 pm

I've got an external harddrive but i'd also like to keep some "negative discs" of my original raw files on archival discs. I've never really heard too much about them and i'm uncertain what makes the best ones.

I've heard that the color of the laminate on the bottomside of a disc (sometimes blue, gold or silver) makes a large difference.

If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I would really appreciate them.

From what I heard it's a lot more talk than else. In any case, since you want archival, I recommend waiting until Christmas when the new models of Blu-Ray recorders will come out and prices will drop. You can store up to 50GB on each Blu-Ray disc as opposed to 8GB for a DVD.
On top of that the future generations of BD will be able to hold up to 200GB of data, with possibly only updating the firmware of current players.

On my last trip to Japan I came back with 28GB of RAW images. That's 3 DVD Double Layer (hard to find and expensive), 7 regular DVDs or 1 BD.

I'm waiting for prices to come down to get a BD-RW myself (Right now around $350-$400).
