It could also depend on your brand of lighting. Some brands use Pocketwizards, some have their own brands (Alien Bees use Cybersync) and I have a brand that works with a Canon ST-E2 remote flash unit. Since I shoot Canon, that works well for me except for one thing - my light meter is compatible with pocketwizards, so I've got an investment in a couple of technologies. I'll probably eventually just convert everything to pocketwizards. You used to be able to find a brand on Ebay called Radio Popper that worked similar to Pocketwizards but were a lot cheaper. I haven't seen these available lately.
