Portable Image Storage Device Information

Postby kjlarson » Fri Oct 20, 2006 8:31 pm

I am looking for information on digital image storage devices, battery powered with built in card slots for CF and Xd cards to take on vacation. Any recommendations with web sites to look at would be appreciated.

portable storage

I own an early SmartDisk FlashTrax and it has been fantasic, backing up many gig of data in cars, at hotels, campsites, and overseas. They have newer better ones now. Those, or the Epsons, are a good choice.

I feel any hard drive based system WITH a display are better than the portable CD/DVD burners as you dont have to carry stacks of media, and their capacity is higher. They also act as USB drives and MP3 players for added flexibility and entertainment on long trips.

The HDD based devices without screens are more compact with just as high capacity, but seeing my shots, showing them on any TV for immediate enjoyment, and even zooming to evaluate sharpness and check histograms makes my FlashTrax a true "must-have" accessory. Get a 12-volt car charger and have fun!

i have a cd burner, i would say if you are looking at one, don't. a dvd burner holds a 4 gig card. you will burn a lot of cd's vs dvd's and it takes awhile.

Just a short $.02 worth, but I actually just use my laptop. Older IBM ThinkPad with a 20 gig harddrive...nice thing is that I can also do much better previews then I could on even one of those portable storage devices with a 7" screen. More over, from what I've seen, those portables are still rather pricey all things considered with some being as much as $400 or more...you can pickup a pretty decent refurbed laptop with a 90 day warrenty for that price. Just some food for thought!

Bright Blessings,
Jim
