First run with D300

Postby hw771230 » Sat Oct 04, 2008 7:23 pm

Hey all. I just got around to looking at my first set of photos from the D300. I've gotta say, I LOVE it. The AF speed and frame rate are unbelievable compared to my D70. I also did some inside shots at ISO 800 to check the noise and there really wasn't any. I'll have to try turning it up even higher. This might be just what I want for Northern Lights photos. Here are a couple of shots from the new camera. Nothing special, but atleast I got out to shoot finally instead of playing with it in the living room the past couple of days.

These are just a couple shots from out back of the property.

This afternoon I went to the timber sports festival and took a couple shots of the ax throwing. It was a great time. Image

I love the expression on this guys face.

C&C always welcome.

Hey Caleb,

looks like our new toys arrived well before Christmas. It's going to be a fun Fall and Winter :)

WOW Caleb, I'll have to say, Cindy and I have been complaining a bit about the 40 degree temps we've been having here in Michigan, and I see you're well on your way to full blown winter. Although it looks like you hardy Northerners are enjoying it like it was a beautiful summer day out...LOL

Cool shots, and glad to hear you like the camera. I have a good friend who just got it also and we were comparing cameras the other night (I know, Guy Stuff) and I'll have to admit, I've always been a Canon guy, but I really like the Nikon D300 and it's features. I guess it's all in what ever you start with. I just happened to start with a Canon, so I always stuck with Canon, but Nikon is a few years ahead in Technology I'd say.

Totally jelous, here. Congrats.
I like the the 1st shot mood ya set, and the tree shot is way good.
Had snow here last night bout 1000ft up so it won't be long. I'm kinda looking forward to the shortday, long shadow effects, that are on the way.

Luca,

I'm looking forward to the winter shooting season more than ever now. I don't think I'll get a real Christmas this year after recently getting a speedlight and now the new body. I'm still happy though.

Pat,

Thanks. It has been a bit cool here the past week, and the snow is a bit of a surprise. It was 8 degrees friday morning.

Royce,

Thanks, it's been fun learning the new controls.

I guess I need some new memory. This thing fills my old 1 gig cards with only 30 shots when I shoot 14 bit RAW.

Caleb,
the RAW files out of my 50D are 20MB each so I'm filling up the memory cards quickly. I just picked a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB for $59 on Amazon.

Why are you guys shooting at 16bit RAW? Does it make that big of a differance than just the regular RAW?

Wow, Luca. I thought I was getting large files at 15. Thanks, I'll look into that deal, but I was thinking more in the range of 4gig. I generally prefer to have smaller cards, and more of them.

Pat,

I have always done all of my processing in 16 bit in PS, and only go to 8 bit to send to .jpg It just makes sense to me that if I start with the highest quality I will end with the highest. Maybe one day commercial labs will print from 16 bit TIFF instead of 8 bit jpg. For now I'll just keep doing everything at the highest quality available to me. With the D70 that was the 12 bit RAW, now I can set the D300 to 14 bit, so I did. Let me know if there is something wrong with my thinking here.

I think I need a new hard drive now, too!
