Which digital camera best for my profession?

Postby mpmarkpeterson59 » Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:59 pm

Hey guys, this is my fist time in this forum, and I am really exited. I'm a beginner photographer and I'm thinking in buying my first canon camera. Most of what I do is portrait, Wedding and fashion photography and I'm still confused which canon camera should i buy. My options are EOS 40D, EOS 450D. Please let me know which one do you think is the best camera for me? My friend refer me one site provides for digital camera reviews. Also, what kind of lenses you recommend would be better to get for this camera?

Hi there,

Just been through this dilema myself and came out with a 40D.

We wanted our camera to shoot wildlife mainly and after talking to quite a few people we plumbed for the 40D based on the fact that was a "Prosumer" camera (Hope thats correct).

The way I saw it was there was a little more about this camera in terms of AF points, more images per second when used in burst, and a few other settings that I can't recall right now.

We have been very pleased with ours to date, this was our first DSLR, and still learning and getting to grips with it.

I'm sure others on here will offer much better advice to you, and welcome. :D :D

If you want to edit any of my images to demonstrate points/techniques to either myself or others please feel free to do so.
Still learning with Canon 40D, 28-135mm, 100-400mm L and Elements 6.
Any Advice greatfully received.

Welcome to the Forum!!

For portraits, weddings and fashion, I think a 5D would be a better option than either of the choices you mentioned. The 40D and 450D are both 1.6x crop cameras and are terrific cameras, but I think you would probably be more interested in the resolution available from full frame sensors. Since the new 5D MarkII will soon be on the shelves, I suspect there will be a lot of used older models available at bargain prices. You may even be able to pick up a new older model at a good price.

If the 5D won't fit in your budget at this time, I'd go for the 40D. It has pretty good low light performance and would make a nice backup camera if you decide to get a 5D later. For weddings, I think 2 cameras are essential. What happens if you're shooting a wedding and one of the cameras fail? You can't just reschedule that event. If you can't afford 2 cameras at this time, I think I would rent a spare when shooting weddings. I know I wouldn't want to tell the new bride that she won't have pictures of her wedding because I didn't have a spare camera.

If you're looking for a site that does fantastic camera reviews, this one is my favorite: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/
And this is my favorite site for lens reviews: http://photozone.de/reviews
