Soccer Feet in Motion

Postby Pokie » Fri Oct 31, 2008 6:10 pm

I took some pics at soccer the other night.
I didn't have enough light to freeze anything, so I tried to take some motion pictures.
There was too much background nonsense - fences, bleachers, lights, etc - to get anything decent.
I decided to shoot feet in motion so that I wouldn't get any of the background clutter.
I now have enough pictures of feet that my older son is convinced I have a foot fetish 8)

Tried speeds ranging from 1/8 to 1 second.
I found that all the best pics were 1/5 to 1/6 second, regardless of f-stop, zoom, lighting.

I like them. The first one was kind of eh but then the farther down I looked the better they got. good job here.

I really like these! I sell composite posters to parents for school sports, and I think a shot like this would add something a little different. I might have to give it a try ~ thanks for the idea!

Jana,

Took a look at your website - nice pics.
Especially liked the bison and the rock!

I've put together composites the last few years.
I've changed the design and layout each time.
I've tried to get at least one photo of each of the kids, had it printed in a 24x36 format,
then had each of the kids autograph it for the coaches and present as surprise at the year end banquet.
(I guess that's the "I shared" part of my tag line)
Two years ago it was that coach's last year, and last year was the new coach's first year.
I think they really appreciated it.
I hadn't thought of doing this as a fund raiser for the soccer team itself.

The photos are a little weak - very few would work as stand alone photos, especially enlarged.
I need more light and more lens to get what I want - mostly night games with a 4.5-5.6 70-300 from the stands is tough!
As part of composites, they've worked pretty well.
If I had to do this one over, I'd cut the number of soccer balls in half and find a better way to frame the several insets that aren't hexagons or pentagons, but not bad for an overnight job!

Thanks for looking at my website! I love taking the wildlife and nature pictures; unfortunately, those don't seem to be the ones that sell ~ but they sure look better on MY wall!!!

What a great idea about making a composite to present to the coaches at the end of the season. I hadn't thought of that. This is my first season of doing the sports photography, and I have made it a point to get pictures of the coaches with the kids in their huddles, etc., but a composite with their pictures that they could all sign is a wonderful idea (good for advertising, too!)! We are snowed in from a blizzard with about 4' of snow right now, so this is a really good time to get started on a volleyball one!! I will be sure to post the results if it turns out!

Thanks again!
Jana

Very cool shots of the feet moving. I agree, I shoot quite a few sports and the light isnt always usable. I'll have to keep this as a tool in the toolbox to still be able to shoot at times like that.

I hope this isn't too far off topic, and I certainly don't want to steal your thread, but your message above about the composite for the coaches got me thinking about what a great idea that was. I wanted to do something like that for the football coaches at our high school, so while I was snowed in and practicing my Photoshop skills (or lack of!), I made up this poster to frame and present to them. Since you gave me the idea, I thought I would share it in this thread!

Great idea Jan. I think the school and the coaches would love something like this!

I bet even some of the kids would buy one if offered
