$600 Limit - What Would You Buy?

Postby JulieZ » Thu Nov 27, 2008 5:49 pm

Hi all. First and foremost, I've learn so much from everyone posting on different lenses, camera bodies plus all the goodies and flaws of their camera. Thank you!!

Moving on .... I'm new to the board & to DSL camera's. I've been the family photographer all my life. I want to see what life outside this area holds. Now, to buy the camera! The camera's I do own are not worth mentioning after reading up on what my heart desires. ;)

I was focusing on a Nikon D40 or D60 until I learn of the AF in the lense verse the body. This is not an option for me as I want to be able to use other lenses. I'm now back to the drawing board.

I've narrowed my wants down to either a Canon or Sony. I've not read up on Olympus yet so I'm unfamiliar with the likes of that camera.

Being tired of researching, I'm turning to all the DSL owners on this board. I'm going to {possibly} take the plunge on something that is mentioned as a recommendation. With that said ....

If YOU had a limit of $600, which starter DSL camera (KIT?) with at least a 12x zoom lense would you purchase for wedding & landscape settings and would you buy a wide angle lense right away?

Thank you,
Julie

Welcome Julie, glad to have you aboard the forum!

If you're just starting out, one thing you might want to do is jump over to Fred Miranda.com and check out their Forum which has a buy/sell section where many photographers are selling their used equipment. Another place that I buy 90% of my stuff is POTN which stands for Photography on the Net. This also has a buy/sell forum and you will be amazed at the great deals you'll find on there. POTN is strictly Canon, which is why I suggested Fred Miranda first as that forum has a bit of everything to choose from.

If you're just starting out, a Canon Rebel or moving up to a 30D would be a great body that you would get years of use from and would allow you to learn with. I've been shooting since I could hold a camera, and have had both of these bodies and love them. I still have the 30D and use it daily as it is the main workhorse in my photography.

You can find used ones all day long for under $600 and many will come with some accessories or the kit lens which is a 18-55mm. This is a fine lens to start with and will cover your wide angle needs up to a medium telephoto. You'll not find it ver useful for nature/wildlife photography as it wont get you close to the subject, unless in a barnyard setting where you can walk right up to the animals...LOL

Cameras are much like computers these days and the price seems to constantly come down while the quality continues to go up. So going out and buying something brand new is somewhat of a waste as the next model will be out in 6 months and have all the things you wished your new camera had. This is one reason why I buy all my stuff used off the forums. It allows me to buy many more things, and saves me a ton of money. I've NEVER been burned with buying anything and not having it perform as stated in the thread I purchased it from, so I wouldnt be too worried about getting scammed. That's what Ebay is for :?

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing what you get and your contribution to the forum.

Thank you for the tips on buying used. I used Ebay as a referrence but did not feel save enough to purchase, despite the promises of 2 year warranties. I will check out the places you referred me too for equipment to the camera my husband suprised me with today. If you will pardon my lack of photography verbal skills, I now own a Nokia D40 with an 18-55 zoom lens. He purchased an additional lens (55-200) with that "flower cap" that attaches to the end. As well as a carry case with all the extra's including a DVD to help me learn what that "flower cap" is all about. I didn't think I wanted this one. I love being wrong [sometimes]. Still, I'm so thankful for this board & all the contributions others make. As soon as I create an alright photograph, I'll share. No promises on excellency. :D

Congrats on the new camera Julie. I think you mean it was a Nikon, not a Nokia :D One makes cameras and one makes phones, but I could be wrong?

If it is the Nikon, I know it is a great camera and those lenses should get you started and keep you busy for years to come. The flowercap thingy is called a lens hood and its use is to keep the light from interfering with the front of the glass. If any of my lenses have them, I keep them on at all times to protect the front of the camera and make sure nothing bumps into that glass.

Depending on what DVD you got, they are usually very helpful to teach you the basics of how your camera operates.

Now go out shooting and post some of your pictures for us to see!

Apologies for the delayed response but Oh my! My learning shows. I own a NIKON, not a Nokia.

I've been out shooting trial & error photographs. I am using PaintShop to enchance but from my studies Photoshop is the route to go. That along with another lens is on my wish list. And a flash. And a tripod. And a wide lens. And a ... :D

As soon as I can I will get some pics up to show. My daughters engagement session was a complete success! She was more impressed with my super amateur skills over her professional photographer she booked. Although I don't see it, it still sounded sweet to the ears.

I would recomend LightRoom 2 it was designed for photographers, to better edit your photos than in photoshop.
there is a few things still better in photoshop, but alot more in lightroom. i downloaded a 30 day trial from there website and i loved it!!!!

Here's a website that has some videos. http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom2/

And the addiction begins!! Welcome to the club! Sounds like you got bit bad and already are well on your way...LOL

On a completely different subject, Mitchell, I got lightroom a year ago, right before CS3 came out. I loved everything that it offered, but when CS3 came out, it incorporated almost everything that Lightroom had, which has made it that I'm almost thinking of deleting Lightroom off my cpu to save on space because it never gets used.

If you're just starting out, I'd probably go with one of the Paintshop's to start with till you feel you have out-grown its limitations and need to step up to Photochop or Lightroom

Pat is correct---there seems to be no cure for this addiction. I was just beginning to fall victim to it and then I met Pat and Cindy when they visited Baja---that was it. I am hopelessly hooked. :D

Good Luck Julie

Thanks for the book "pushing" .... I will check it out. Keep the addictions going with ideas. I'm all for it. :D

I am uploading a photo I took at a Civil war reenactment on 12/7. I hope the size is right ... Nothing like making a goob of yourself as you go. :D

I did use Paint Shop Pro Ultimate to enhance the colors.

If no one minds, I welcome all critiquing.
