First Time with Cheerleading Competition

Postby Bonish Photo » Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:13 pm

My niece was in a Cheerleading Competition last week so I brought the cameras along to see if it would be any fun photographing.

I caught a few cool shots that I thought I'd share. At least these were the ones she said she like the best.

We liked that the whole squad is in the air at the same time. Probably the reason her J.V. Team even beat the Varsity

Image
Same thing here. The whole team is almost perfectly aligned in the air together

This one is my favorite. My neice, Courtney is the one in the air. Like everyone else in our family, she's the smallest one on the team, so of course she's the one who gets thrown in the air. I liked that she can brag that she's higher than the basketball net!

It was fun for my first time shooting this type of event and she was thrilled with the pictures to show off to her friends.

Howdy Bonish,
Nice shooting! I see you were shooting without flash, you might want to adjust your white balance when shooting indoors without flash, everything has that amateurish yellow cast to it. Good stuff there though and they were only practicing right?

Hey Brent, thanks for the tips on the white balance, I shot in RAW and tried to adjust the balance in ADOBE Raw to get the yellow cast out, but that was the best I could do.

It was a competition so I couldnt use any flash and couldnt be wandering around down on the floor. I had to sit up in the stands like all the other family. :(

I know she has another one coming up in early January, I'll try some shooting again and see if I cant get some better results

Howdy Pat,
RAW is great! Your program adobe raw should have given you better results. I shoot RAW and convert with Adobe Lightroom to Photoshop Elements 5(I have 6 & 7 and even CS3) but I really like 5. That is what I know(layers). I'm puzzled still? I am happy that you allowed your daughter to pick out the one she liked and you shared them with us. Thanks for sharing.

Great shots Pat!
My daughter has her first comp coming up next month, and I hope I can get anything close to what you've posted!

Thanks R L, I just pushed the ISO way up, set it on 5fps and shot away :D

Like I said, she has another competition coming up, and I'm looking forward to going back now that I know what to expect

Hey Pat, its that time so I checked back on your post. How far up did you push your iso setting?
Heading out this weekend for a comp with the daughter and would like to have any suggestions for this type of event.
Thanks everyone in advance!

Hey Royce, I dont have the originals on this cpu, I'll post the exacts tomorrow if that's not too late, but if I remember correctly, I was up around ISO 800 or 1000 and shooting with a f/2.8 lens which made a big difference.

The 70-200 f/2.8 is also Image Stabilized. So I also had that working for me :D Dont want you to think it's all skill....just nice equipment...LOL

Good luck, and cant wait to see some of your shots.
