On the market...

Postby outdoor-passion » Thu Jan 15, 2009 10:25 pm

Well I am new to this and right now the only camera I have is a Fujifilm finepix s1000fd. I don't have a lot of money but I was wondering what camera would be recommended and be the best for my money.

Thanks guys,

Dan

Dan,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

I think most of the members here use either Canon or Nikon. The main reason is they both have excellent glass available. Camera bodies are constantly changing but good glass will always be good glass. If I were just starting out with a very limited budget, I would look into buying used. You should be able to cover most ranges with 2 fairly inexpensive lenses. Canon has an 18-55IS lens and a 55-250IS that would allow you to shoot a lot of different subjects fairly inexpensively, especially if you could find them used. These 2 lenses would cover a lot of subjects, but wouldn't be the best choice for birds or for shooting macros.

There are a couiple of sites where members buy and sell equipment that I've found reliable. Here are 2 that I've used with success - just be careful.

The next one will be mostly Canon equipment, but there may be a similar site for Nikon. Maybe someone else will point you towards it.

I have heard the xsi, is a GREAT camera. its what i'm gunna get[one of these days]. The guy at my local camera shop says it's a great camera to start with[with the cost and all].
I do believe someone on here uses the xsi, i think its the xsi. Though i'm not sure who it is.

If you're even thinking of Canon, make sure to check out the POTN Sell Thread as there are always tons of killer deals on there.

I just sent a link to a buddy who was thinking about getting a set-up for his wife the other day that was a Rebel XTi, kit lens with a 75-300 along with the bag, filters and extra batteries for something like $500  I mean that's a steal no matter how you look at it.

I try and check that thread at least every day just because there will be stuff that I might not even need just yet, but you see it for a few hundred off the list price and I cant let it pass.

I really want a Mark IIn right now and they normally go for over $2000 and some guy is selling one for $1400 with 3 batteries (the batteries are $120 a piece), but I just dont have any money to snatch it up right now.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up getting

Here's a link to a forum for Nikon equipment.
There's a "I want to buy" forum as well.
I've scoped out a few things on this forum and on FM, but never bought.
Things generally move fast.

Welcome to the forum. I bought the Canon XSi last July and have been 100% happy with it. I started with the basic film Rebel, then moved up to the Digital XT and before a trip to Alaska, I bought the XSi. I would wish I could offer some critisizm, but I just don't have any complaints. I would love to have a full frame sensor, but at this price level, I could not hope for a better camera. The live view feature comes in handy more than I every thought possible.

I am now spending my money on better lenses in anticipation of the day that I can afford to upgrade again in a couple of years.

I wish I could figure out how to paste an image on this forum, I've given up, but there is a link below to some images that might be helpful. The first 11 images are off of the XSi. The rest are off my XT. If you go the the Alaska folder on the left, all of those images are from the XSi.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will try to assist.

Since the site switched to the new software it's very easy to add images. You used to have to have your images stored on another site and then post a link, but now you can upload images from your computer. To upload directly, just click on "Upload Attachment", then "Browse" your computer to find the file and then click on add the file.

Since you have images on Photobucket, you can post the links here very easily by bringing up your image in Photobucket, right click on it and copy the properties. Then when posting, click on the "Img" tab at the top of the reply box and the system will add and position your cursor in between the two labels. Just hit your "Insert" key and the system will copy the properties from your image in between the two labels. If for some reason your properties do not end with ".jpg", you will need to add it. Some sites don't include the file type in the properties.

Here's one of your images from photobucket and I just described what I did above to display your images. If you have any problems, let us know. I'm sure we can walk you through it.

Here are the properties:

Well, after trying the directions I posted and copying your properties, I got the dreaded red x instead of the display. You will need to remove this portion from the properites shown above:
?action=view&current=

Here's your beautiful image after removing the above from the properties:

Photobucket is even easier than that. Just look at the photo you want to post or scroll over the thumbnail. Then click on the "img code" at the bottom. It should copy automatically. Then past it in your thread. If you use firefox you may have to actually copy the text, but I know explorer copies automatically.

Nice picture! We don't see that type of shot in Northern Indiana during this time of year - so this one will just need to be my reminder that warmer weather is just around the corner - I hope...

This is more of a comment than a reply. I have a Fujifilm FinePix HS10. It has a 30X lens that covers 24mm to 720mm which means I don't need to carry a lot of equipment. It also shoots 1080p video. I used it in Yosemite and points west with fabulous results. I recommend this camera for anyone who wants good results with maximum portability and functionality. Obviously a Canon or Nikon full SLR will take excellent pictures, but it will also take a serious money investment to cover the same range of focal lengths. Of course if you want extremely large printouts or you need to crop severely you will need the higher pixel count of a more professional camera.
