How do you show off your photos?

Postby JulieZ » Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:04 pm

Outside of displaying them on a website, how does everyone show them off in print form ... Photo books, cases, binders, etc?

Good question.
I keep mine mainly on my computer. I print off the ones I use to paint from, put them in albums, and every year I make calendars for family, the parents of 4-H kids, etc. I also am a member of a local art gallery, and I suppose I could take a couple of my photo albums up there in case people were interested in my references for my paintings.
There is a publishing guide for artists, it comes out every year. It lists names of galleries, greeting card companies, etc. that buy artwork including photography. If you are looking to sell, that is what I would do. Here in Nebraska we have the Horse Expo in Lincoln, and they have a photography contest that is horse themed. The issue with some contests is relinquishing your rights to the photo. If you don't care, then go for it. Professional photographers don't like that sort of thing. Check in the back of photo magazines, they might have contests there too, but check to see what licensing rights you may be giving up when entering.
I don't know if this helps.

Right now, most are just on my computer. But since this is like a 'course' for me in school, mom had me make a Photo Journal. granted the paper & pic quality isn't the greatest, but it works for now.
When i have more "pro" photos, i'm thinking about making an actual photo book. Mac has this thing were you can make your pages and send it in and they'll print it out all nicely for you.[with a cost, but i think very cool.]
I'm also considaring entering some photos into a local fair. no idea how to do this at the moment, but i was 'just' given the idea.
I also like to give some photos to friends/family as gifts.
Hope this helps some. :)

Most of my photos are just on my computer and a number of them are on a web site. The only pics I print are ones of family members. My wife does scrapbooking and has made scrapbooks for all our kids and grandkids as Christmas presents. I think these are everyones' favorite presents. This is an ongoing process for her. Each year she either sends everyone new pages to insert into their existing scrapbooks or if they are pretty full, she starts new ones for them. Of course, I'm charged with the responsibility of getting new pics each year and since she doesn't fuss when I buy new equipment, I'm always happy to be the family photographer.

I printed a coffee table book that I use as a portfolio. It worked, it landed me a space in a gallery.

I have pictures on flickr, and I believe they will make a book for you. I think a 40 page book is around $30 or so, I thought that sounded reasonable. I am not sure the name of the outfit linked to flickr that makes them, but something like that is worth looking into. I would have no idea where to lay a book like that down in order to get someone interested in my work, but I don't have gallery quality photos, either. Great idea, though.

Besides the website and my computer, I am working on getting a set of photos together to print a book to use as a portfolio.

Sorry for my extremely late response ....

I've been keeping a few photographs on my website, most are on my computer & dvds but I've been using all the free print places, pay only shipping, to start a portfolio book. I bought a basic black binder, added protective sheets and I use the scrapbook dots to add my 4x6 prints. It's a start but I agree with the coffee table books for portfolios. Still, the web seems to be the way to show off everything these days but I still love the old fashion ways too. I find it hard to pick out a few photos from the same shoot that turned out amazing for my homemade photo book. Decisions, decisions ...

The link to "free" prints, just pay shipping ... http://freecamprints.com/?gclid=CPH9raC ... xgodFkCEmA
