Hi, new here

Hello, wanted to say hey and hopefully learn a bit of everything photography related. I'm 42, live in Nebraska, and I use my pictures for painting reference. I'm not sure just how to post pictures here, I see the Img button above, so I may give it a whirl. I enjoy seeing everyone else's photography here. I'm sure there will be tons of information I can pick up!

Hello oTTer!!! Welcome to the forums! i hope you enjoy it here! I am a.k, a highschool student, and VERY new to photography.
if you have your photos on a web site, you can right click on it[the photo] go to "properties" and copy & paste the URL code to your post. Then hightlight the code and click the img button. That should make your photos come up. Hope it made sense.
i look forward to seeing some of your shots!

I know little about photography. The only reason some of my pictures come out decent is I have an artistic eye. I have a Pentax, and only because I had the 100-300mm lens from my film camera, so I didn't have to spend the money on another lens. I leave it on automatic. I learned on an old K1000, but there is so much about ISO, shutter speed etc etc it's easier for me to let the camera do the work. I would like to think I want to learn more, but who has time? Maybe I can pick up some stuff here.
I took these guys by a pond in Omaha.

Wow, awesome shots!!
I can understand why you set it on auto, 'specially if you're mostly using the photos as painting pallets...or whatever that would be called.[i am, by no means, an artist. so i really have no idea what the 'lingo' is. haha]

Welcome to the Forum and it's always nice when new members introduce themselves and add pics! We love pics! We're a pretty friendly group and the members are always happy to help out other members. If you have any questions, usually at least one or two of the members can answer them. BTW, did I mention that we love pics?

I am so glad, since I have a gazillion of them. Unfortunately all but about ten are very bad If you know what I mean.
Digital has saved my pocketbook. It's great to go out and take a hundred duck pictures, because only a handful will turn out well. I am sure there are better cameras out there than my pentax, but I can't afford anything nicer, and it suits me so I'll keep it! I enjoy looking at everyone else's photos, too.

haha, i know how THAT goes. went out a few days ago...and all but two of my pics turned out half way decent! thank God for digital!
i'm sure your pentax is much better then the point and shoot i still use! haha.

Hi Pamela and welcome.

Those are some nice shots you have posted.

Don't worry about shooting on auto, if that's what your comfortable with. However if you can experiment with the other settings over a period of time then you start to control the camera a little more and you can get photos how you want them to look.

As Bob says fire away with any questions, I have learnt a lot from the guys on here.

Hi Pamela, just wanted to welcome you formally and let you know that most on here will do their best to answer any questions you might have.

For shooting in full auto, you are showing some awesome shots

Like Edd Said, as you become more comfortable with your camera, start experimenting with manual settings or trying new things. Check out the EXIF data on other images that you like and see what setting their using. This is a great way to teach yourself
