Self Portraits or Photographers in the Image

Postby Bonish Photo » Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:27 am

I know this is a thread over on the POTN Forum, and I always get a chuckle out of the photos people post.

Either of themselves in a funny situation, or of other photographers shooting a shot. It makes you keep your eye out for other scenes other than the one in front of the camera. I know many times I'll be shooting somewhere and when I see a group of photographers lined up all shooting the same direction, its fun to turn around and shoot them rather than the scene they're all shooting.

So lets see your shots of either yourself in a self-portrait or of shots with other photographers in them.

I'll start with a few shots of our favorite Outdoor Photographer Luca Diana

I get paranoid when my shadow is in a shot! Let alone my reflection, someone else etc. I will have to keep that in mind when I am out and about.

Don't be scared, it's just me ... uh ... I mean just my shadow...

I frequent a horse board and when people post pictures with their shadow in it, I cringe. Also they might have a kid kissing a horse, and everyone oohs and aaahs at it, but I can't get past the abandoned refridgerator, the fence panels leaning up against the rusted box of a truck, a dead goat carcass hanging from the tree etc. etc. to think it is a good photo. I see a photo from top to bottom, side to side... and unless it's Daniel Craig nekkid amongst all that other stuff, I won't find it remotely appealing.
So for my own pictures, I try to keep my fingers away from the lens and my shadow out of the shot.

Cynical, those all look like advertisements for an outdoor company!

Nice shots!

Is a self-portrait like an painting, as in the person in the photo had to take the shot? I know cameras have timers on them, but how did you get the sun right behind your head? Or is that your halo?

That would be the evidence that i am actually an angel. :)

Actually, I set the camera up and started the timer. I then climbed up the rock and placed the shadow of my head right over the camera lense...I guess I got lucky.

Lucky in that it turned out as well as it did. I had an idea as to what I wanted and I set it up that way. With the sun low in the sky like that I had to hurry to get up the rock, it took a little climbing, and do it all in ten seconds. I didn't have a tripod as I had just climbed a dome in the Sierra to get to that point. I propped the camera up on my daypack.

hey y'all! what a fun thread. The picture i wanted to post doesn't seem to be online yet(just got back last night from my week vacation in Jaskson, TN)
So this will just have to do. I did not take it(obviously), but i like it so much(not often i get photos of myself. lol) It was taken by my best friend, and i know its over exposed, but we personally liked that look for this shot.

this was taken by me(and thanx to my best friend for being my model). you can only see my hand...but i like it.
