Nice shots, man! I love them all, but the 4th one... wow! what a rush!

I've seen plenty rodeos (as a matter of fact I live behind the local rodeo grounds and they have a rodeo every day in summer) but never shot a rodeo with my 30D and the good lenses. I took this one a few summers ago, sorry if I don't post the higher quality, but with all kind of photo theft going on online... the original is part of the 12-month calendar I sell.

Thanks Luca and Robin! Nice capture of your own there Luca. I grew up in Colorado on a cattle ranch and had the privilege and great fun of participating in the "Little Britches Rodeo" when I was 12. A Lot of fun! Now I live in Northern California and I like to go to the local Russian River Rodeo. It's not a great big one but a photographers paradise...

Thanks Robin and Pat.
For that shot I used my old Canon A70, nearly 5 year old Poiny & Shoot camera but pretty decent quality, much better than the more recent A85.

You had some good light. Around here, the rodeos start about seven p.m. so by the time the bulls come out, it's dark, and I can't get a decent shot. Try the Miles City Bucking horse sale some time, it's in May, three days of bucking horses, bulls and a wild horse race at the end of the day. There you get a million shots in broad daylight! Unfortunately when I went, the best camera I had was my camcorder. Oh, well.
Here's what I mean by poor light

If I can get to when my brother in law has the spare ropings during the day before the night rodeo, I get a lot of good calf roping and steer wrestling shots.

When I looked at picture #3 for the first time, I felt like I could actually see the cowboy spinning as if I was there myself! NICE picture!!!!!

Eli,

Great shots! I love #3 too! Can really FEEL the moment.

I'm not sure if there's a way for me to see the EXIF data for the pictures or not but I'd love to know how they were shot (Mode, speed, f-, ISO, sunlight, etc). For me that's the best way to learn. Really, great shots! Thanks for posting.

Here are a few from the Rock Bottom Chuck Wagon Races held on Memorial Day Weekend in Arkansas. We're headed there this year to cover the event if any members are from this area, it's a very cool weekend event!!

This was a horse race around the oval track, and rounding one of the turns the guys saddle strap broke and his saddle basically fell off which dumped him on the ground at a very high rate of speed!!!
Canon 1D and I think I had my ISO bumped way up to 800 on this one, dont have my hard drive hooked up with the original photo, and for some reason the EXIF data isnt on Smugmug?

Ranch Rodeo during the night time events! These are real cowboys who do this for a living. I was very impressed, and my wife was in love :D
Canon 1D ISO 200 70-200 f/2.8 lens

They have horse races where anyone can enter, and it costs like $20 to enter and the winner takes that pot. Well this young lady and her horse would win every time. On the second day, the event organizers tried to talk her out of entering because none of the Cowboys wanted to enter if she was going to. I guess they didnt want to be shown up by a young lady! I printed this out and gave it to her and she was the glowing she was so happy!!
Taken with a Canon 1D f/9 @ 1/400th of a sec ISO 200 - 70-200 f/2.8L Lens

Pat, that last shot looks like she posed for Remington. Super, super picture. I bet she was thrilled to get it, too.
When my sis's 4-H kids were wanting to learn barrels, games etc. and wanted to know how to ride for those, she said "Forget everything I ever taught you about your seat, legs, hands etc." Obviously - I have some pretty wild pictures from barrel racing. I avoid anything that makes my shirt puff up with air!

I wonder if it makes that much of a difference? I mean you can see in this photo the guys shirt is filled with air and he was way behind the girl

Probably why cyclists wear skin tight gear. Makes sense! Yeah, she was geeked to get the shot. I think she went around to everyone there showing them it and smiling ear to ear. She was only like 17 or 18 years old. I was told hse just travels to all the events with her horse to race in races like this and makes good money doing it. Although so many wont enter if they know she is going to be in the race :D
