Looking at a new camera

Postby MINNESOTA DICK » Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:56 am

Looking at buying a Cannon Sx10 IS camera in the very near future.

I am wondering what the people on this forum think of this camera? I plan on using it a a general carry around camera as in the car, atving, hikeing and ect. I want something better than the general run of the mill point and shoot camera.

I have a Nikon D80 and several Nikon lens but I don't want hall all of that around with me all the time as it is too much to carry around with me. I am trying to stream-line my self abit and still get some good pictures and not have to invest in all the Cannon lens that a Cannon DSLR would require.

So lets here what you people think of the SX10 IS.

Looked up a review on DPReview, (probably the benchmark for camera reviews) and this thing looks pretty impressive.

Full HD Movie capabilities, 10 megapixel, wide all the way to a pretty good telephoto reach and 4fps is very impressive for a high end point and shoot.

If you were just looking to streamline what you carry around, I'm thinking this would be a great addition.

It basically has everything that made me leave the point and shoot at home and only carry around the DSLR. The only thing I'd like to see is what is the shutter lag. This is the one factor that keeps me from picking up point and shoots no matter how nice they seem. Something about having to anticipate what is going to happen so you can press the shutter to wait the few seconds before the camera will actually take the picture just ruins it all for me.

I'd probably go to the nearest place that has one and sit and play with it for a few. Snap some pictures in the store to see how fast it shoots and focuses.

I'd be interested to see what you think, because I had just said to Cindy that we need to get a point and shoot for times we ourselves dont want to lug the enormous amount of gear we normally carry with us. But neither of us could think of a model we wanted except for the new Olympus that is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof. Only because of how rough we are on our point and shoots

PAT-- Don't know what you want in the way of a P&S, but I have a Coolpix SC50 for the last couple years. I carry it EVERYWHERE. Don't go out the door without it. Picked up a little leather case for it when I bought it and can even charge it in the truck if needed. Pretty sharp for what it is. I do believe they have a SC60 now, but this one does find for me, no need to upgrade. There are a lot of reasons to carry it. :)

Thanks for the recommendation Tusker. I just picked up that Olympus P&S last week. Planning on playing with it for a week or so and posting a full review for others to compare.

So far, i like it ALOT. Still hate the time delay when pressing the shutter release, but oh well

Pat,

Which Olympus did you get? I have been looking at the Fuji S100FS as an upgrade to my Fuji S5100. Hopefully my wifes finacial aid money will start coming in soon! :D

Thanks,

Chris

Shameless Self-Portrait :D

Olympus 1050SW 10 megapixel, waterproof to 10', crushproof to 260lbs of pressure and freezeproof. I figure since I drop or submerge almost all my cameras and is how I've broken my last 3 P&S's, I'd give this one a try. Bought it for $275 (I think, it was a week ago?) from Wal-Mart.com and it came with a 4gig card.

So far I've been carrying it everywhere with me and its small and light enough, I forget its in my pocket. Only about the size of a very thin wallet. Only has a 3x zoom, but I will only be using it for stuff I dont want to carry a big camera around with. Macro mode is really cool and I've been playing alot with that.

I'll post a full review after a few weeks of shooting with it and can judge how I like it better then. Right now, I'm still loving all the features it has

I just picked a Canon G10. Awesome camera. Even shoots in RAW.

Yes, but can it go underwater without being put in a big, clumsy housing :D
