Simulating Wide Angle Lenses

Postby Edd » Tue Apr 21, 2009 8:20 am

Okay sounds like a daft subject (probably is) but one of the photography magazines that I subscribe to wants its readers to take close up photos of wildlife (Insects etc) in a wide picture so it shows the creature in its natural environment.

Problem is the widest angle I have is 28mm plus the 1.6 Crop makes it a 44.8mm :(

I have extension tubes so I can get closer but does anyone have any idea how I can make a wide angled shot with these. :?

I have thought about taking several shots and stitching them together like a panorama, but I don't think it will work.

Anyone got any ideas.

Thanks

Ed

I am guessing that they want the insect to be shot up close but either doing it's daily chores or in their living environment such as pollinating a flower, in a honeycomb, ant hill, making a web, etc... All you need for those is the insect and a touch of their surroundings so the viewer can tell where it is...

A tight composition can still be done here to tell your story. First off, your effective 44mm lens (with crop factor taken into consideration) is very close to a 50mm. A 50mm lens is liked by many because it's focal length is basically like a humans so you should have enough coverage with that lens. The extension tubes are very nice for macro work without needing a macro so I think you should be all set.

The best way to try is to go out and actually try it out.

Thanks for the advice, oh and welcome to the forum :D :D

All the images shown in their demo photos are all wide angle, I'll give it a try when it stops raining and let you know how I get on.

Thanks
