Lens - is it worth it?

Postby jk » Wed May 13, 2009 1:22 pm

Is it really worth it to have both a 18-135 3.5-5.6 lens and a 35 1.8? I know he who dies with the most toys....but what would be gained? Thanks for the input.

Prime lenses tend to be sharper but if you are considering your camera makers top of the line lenses (like Canon's L series) there should not be a huge difference. What are you photographing most often that you are looking to a 35mm lens and which body sensor size, ie. full frame, 1.3 or 1.6 sensor? I personally want my investment in gear to give me variety and options. Granted my L lenses give me a F2.8 fixed instead of the 3.5-5.6 you are getting, so the speed gain is not as great. Keith

I have both and wouldn't consider selling either one. The 18-135 is a great travel lens when you want to go light. The 35 is on my D80 about half of the time. It's a really sharp lens, small, light, etc. I tend to spend most of my time shooting in the wide-angle to short-tele range. I also have the AFS 50 f/1.4. All three of these lenses have their place and I use them all.
