Trona Pinnacles

Postby Graham Owen » Mon Jul 13, 2009 3:36 pm

Saturday I was cooked out in the desert, photographed these pinnacles, just south of Death Valley, and it was 118 at sunset. Pretty cool place to check out, if one can deal with the heat....

118!!!! and I was complaining about 70-85 that we have been getting here in Alaska LOL.. I have been in 114 with 100% humidity when I lived in Virginia though and that was too much for me also. I also lived in Barstow in my younger days.. anyway I like the photo, the desert I think is always a fun place shoot.

Dry heats not an issue, humidity is miserable.

As someone who lived in AZ a few years, I'd challenge that statement. Anytime the temps exceed 110, the heat is an issue!
During the summer, Memphis has high humidity and temps but at least the wind can have a cooling effect - not so in AZ once the temps get up around 115.

Thanks Bob! I was thinking the same with respect to heat. It was like a blast furnace. I planned on spending a few hours at the pinnacles then drive to the sierra for the night. Instead, I hiked up and around the pinnacles, momentarily resting in the shade of pinnacles, snaping a few shots, but really trying to find the best sunset location. If the sky was full of goegeous clouds, I would have used a super wide lens and been in the formations, but the boring sky led me to drive south, and go for a shot capturing little sky and as much of the scene as possible. By the time I was done, I was cooked, and drove home for a cold shower and AC. I wimped out, missed a day shooting in the mountains, and that doesn't happen too often, the heat was insane.

Graham,

I know that feeling, which is one of the reasons I no longer live in AZ. :)

I look forward to returning, the location is out-of-this-world looking, it's where they filmed Planet of The apes.

Nice shot Graham.

I like the similarity between the colours in the leaves and the colours of the sun on the rocks.

That's one of the nicest shots I have ever seen of the Pinnacles. Beautiful colors. I'll be passing right through there on our way to Saline Valley Hot Springs tomorrow.
The Sahara, Arctic Canada and Alaska, Baja, USA Southwest and Death Valley. These are the places you'll find me.
