Cheyenne Frontier Days 113th Edition

I just returned home after nearly 9 hours drive (thank you road construction) and 3 amazing days of rodeo spent with Pat and Cindy. I was actually expecting to come home and find that he had already posted something but looks like I'm the first for once. We'll fill you guys in with the details and more photos later, for now here's 2 photos fresh out of my camera (on the first day alone I shot around 1500 photos):

I've been working on my images for like 10 hours now. That's the only bad part of spending 3 full days of shooting. I have over 29gigs of images to sort through and when you love the sport so much, it's hard to pick only a few out of the literally thousands of images we have from this event.

Here are a few from the Bronco Riding that stood out from my first few days of shooting. I'm sure I'll have more, as we are headed back out today for more Rodeo action


My back hurts every time I look at these pictures. I think I was munching on pain killers last night just from editing these.











So do you understand now why it is so hard to pick only a few images to post. And this is just from the Bronco Riders and only the first day. I've got hundreds more from the 2nd and 3rd day and like I said, we're headed back out today Jeesh, my shutter finger is starting to hurt just thinking about it.

wow! well so far so good! they look great. And i agree- makes my back hurt looking at it too.
and here i thought i had it bad just going through 300 and some umpire photos.

I wish I didn't have to leave. Great photos, Pat. My Mark II is fine, just a scratched focusing screen, which I had already planned to replace with the grid one.

Great pictures Luca and Pat, and looks like so much fun (my horse used to act just like that when I rode him...thank goodness he is a bit older (20!) and acts his age now )! Sure looks like a lot more fun than 8 hours of shooting baseball in 97 degrees!!! The Spearfish American Legion team won Regionals last night though and are going to State for the first time since 2003, so it was a good tournament!

Thanks Jana,

Pat and I were wondering if you'd show up at the event. The first day was pretty hot with no clouds, all over the crowd they had setup these tubes that create a mist to keep people chilled, not on the photographers' stand though (although I would not have liked having mist on my lenses). The second day was cloudy so the heat was much more bearable.
Last night I finally started looking at the photos, I have nearly 3900, that's gonna be a lot of editing. I spent 3 hours just for the first pick. Unfortunately with an 8am to 8pm shift every day it leaves me little time for anything else.

3900 images to sort in 3 hours

I took 198 images yesterday of my wife's friend riding her horse and it took me 2-3 hours to reduce that down to 36 for editing.

Heaven only knows how long it would take me to sort 3900 shots !!!!

Great shots! Can't tell you which I like best. I think I like the exposure on the first bronc shot - great action in all of them.

#1, #2 and #4 in the second set remind me of a line from "Smokey and the Bandit" when Burt Reynolds said, "I only take my hat off for one thing."
For these guys, evidently, falling off a horse ain't the reason!

Last night I didn't have any time to go through the photos. So far I just trimmed the stack a bit, there are still around 2000 images I need to go through. None of the above were edited (except for resizing). I have a few more that I posted on one of my websites. Don't really have time to watermark, upload to my server and post here so I'll just post the link to them:

Your fisheye shot of the saddle bronc from behind the bucking chute is FANTASTIC!!!! I love the way it brings back memories of being behind the chutes trying to see what's happening...and us high school girls had a view of the broncs and the cowboys! Definitely my favorite shot so far!

You have to remember that Luca's shooting 6fps with that 50D, so 3900 shots is just the amount of snapping the shutter to make sure you get all the action. You dont actually process all 3900 images....Or at least I would never fool around with that amount.



I do the same thing when I'm shooting, but you just browse through the shots till you see one that you like. Then you grab the RAW file and fool with that one. So in reality, you're probably only fooling with a few hundred. It's just the thousands of images can get very taxing when you're trying to get anything done quickly. I've been working for a few days now and actually want to turn my camera off of the fastest multi-frame option...LOL



Luca, that fisheye shot is really cool, I like it alot. I also finally got a Saddle Bronc & Bareback Gallery posted if anyone is interested in seeing a weeks worth of work spent at the rodeo.

Jana, I think one of the very best compliments a person can give to a photographer is saying that their photo brings back memories. Thank you from my heart.
Pat is right, I skim through the photos and only the very best will move to the editing table (more like the Editing Module, I know...)

As a matter of fact that fisheye shot (to those who say fisheye is a useless lens and hate it ) has become my favorite of the entire rodeo. I'm looking for a place where I can get a print several feet long and I want it to occupy an entire wall in my room.

On a side note, I just returned from Yellowstone where I spent the day with Lewis Kemper, one of Canon's Explorers of Light photographers. I joke to him saying that "Explorers of Light" is a fancy phrase for "people who get up really early in the morning" he's getting me up at 5am for the next 2 days.

Those are some fantastic action shots. I really like the shallow DOF used. It makes them jump right off the screen.

man how do you get lucky enough to shoot with A canon explorer of light other than going on a workshop, (is that what yah did?)
