WHAT'S UP WITH THIS CANON AND NIKON THING?

Postby Corker2 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 4:12 pm

I've been reading OP now for a few day's, and I've noticed that quite a bit of the Images I see are taken with a Canon or Nikon Camera. I have not seen many Images taken with a Pentax DSLR. Why is this?

I am more than well aware that Canon and Nikon make a very good Camera, but what about the others that are out there? Why does it always seem to be Canon or Nikon? There are probably allot of us out there that really can't afford the big named camera's, with all the fancy priced Lens that can go with it. The Pentax K100D that I have, does a real fine job taking nice Images for the price that I paid. I just can't afford getting a Nikon or Canon. Too expensive for me. I would just love to have one of those BIG Lens that professional people use, just to see how really good they are. However, paying more than $1000.00 for a Lens does is not really a good idea for me and the kind of photography that I do.

When I do things right with my Pentax K100D it will produce a great Image of what I see and try to capture. I will continue to use my Pentax, as always. I'm sure that there are other Pentax user's out there, and not just me. :D

Les,

Canon is number 1 and Nikon is number 2 and nothing else is very close in the DSLR world, so you're going to see most images taken with one of those cameras. Both of these companies offer a large selection of excellent equipment that is used by amateurs and pros. They are not the only camera manufacturers, but they are the 2 most popular, probably because they do manufacture top of the line equipment that can cost thousands of dollars. The availabililty of such equipment allows users to have an upgrade path if they decide they want to pursue photography seriously or as something more than a hobby.

If your Pentax meets your demands, then I'd say you bought the right camera for you. Pentax also has lenses that cost over a thousand dollars just like the other manufacturers, but if you find no need for them, what difference does it make? As long as you're happy with your equipment, what difference does it make what your equipment cost, the brand or what other people use? I don't think any of us got into this hobby to see how much money we could spend. I have quite a bit of equipment that I've bought over a number of years (quite a bit was bought used). I've also bought and sold lenses as my shooting style changed and I tried to find what worked best for me. I'm currently happy with my equipment although my camera is getting rather dated and could use an upgrade, but I'm not in any hurry. It's capabilities still far exceed my skill.

Les, I don't think anyone on this board cares about what equipment the other person used to capture an image. Some of us jokingly post envious remarks about someone's new equipment, but I'm sure each of us is actually happy for that person. IMHO, owning better equipment will not make you a better photographer, but it may allow you to capture better images. If those images were captured by a Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc., what difference does it make? If the camera and lens cost hundreds or thousands, who cares? If the image is technically perfect and the post processing is superb, great, but the real question is was the person that took it happy with the results, if so, what else actually matters? If you're happy with your equipment and the results you obtain, what more could you ask for?

Les welcome to the forum.

What type of photography do you do ???

If you want post a few images and tell us more about yourself.

Like Bob said its not about the equipment but the results.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I actually have 2 pentax cameras. I would not get better pictures with any other camera because the end result is my subject matter, how I frame, use lighting, etc. My sole reason for getting that brand was I already had a 100-300m lens to fit. I also notice there are almost exclusive shots taken with Canon and Nikon. Wearing Nikes doesn't make you a better runner, but what will you see most athletes wearing? It is what it is. Look at it this way, less demand for Pentax will keep their prices down??
If someone is thinking to get a camera, nikon and canon are the first two brands that pop up. I know several people who bought nikons to photograph their kids' ball games, etc. That is what stores like Best Buy and Wal mart carry. I have to go to a photo store to find a Pentax, or order online. If it makes you feel better, think of it as you know something they don't and since you're one of the few who does have a pentax, you're just that much more original than everyone else. Someone here said the camera body isn't as imortant as the lenses you use. I've seen awful pictures taken with expensive equipment, and excellent pictures taken with cheaper equipment so in the end it's the talent of who is holding the camera. If you get disgusted and decide to get a nikon or canon, send me your pentax :D I am glad to meet another pentax owner, honestly I haven't met anyone else with one, online or in the flesh. We're probably all nuts anyway.

Nothing more really needs to be said. I feel the same way about my Canon gear, and if I had the money, I'd try out the Pentax, Sigma, Sony bodies/lenses to see if they compare or hang in there with Canon.

I've shot Canon since I was a teenager, so my money started to become invested in their lenses and I've never turned back. If that first purchase was a Pentax or any other said brand, I'd probably own a host of that equipment.

As long as you can produce nice images you're happy with, then you can be shooting with a Throw-away Kodak for all we care, we just want to see nice images no matter what they're taken with.

I don't think you could go wrong with Canon or Nikon.

What lenses are available is a LOT more important than the brand of camera chosen. If you want to grow up as a photographer you must take lenses into consideration.

That last statement is not completely accurate. While you may manage to take an excellent picture with a point and shoot, there are many situation that they simply will not give acceptable results. Low light situations or situations that require a long telephoto immediately come to mind. You might also take a look at some of Dalantech's work to see how restrictive a P & S can be. A P & S has many of the same faults as a super-telephoto lens. You may get some excellent pics with it, but there are a lot better options to get consistant results.
