Signature question

Ever wanted to ask a professional how they approach the landscape or wildlife or how they set up their camera for great photographs? What about asking what kind of gear the pro uses and why? Well here's your chance.

Signature question

Hi all,

I'm curious what the accepted practice is for signing prints that you're selling? I've heard different things like only sign the front if you made the print, or only sign the matboard if you framed it, etc. It's kinda confusing so I'm hoping someone can set me straight on what the industry norm is.

Thanks!

hey there

I never knew there was a rule. If the photographer and the person who framed it are a different person I really don't see why the person who frame it should sign it. If I buy artwork I care about who made the artwork not about who framed it. I never heard of anyone being famous for framing :)
That said, I usually sign the print in pencil, occasionally with a acid-free pen.

I sign mine on the front with an acid free marker, if I am signing them i also sign the back and provide a signed certificate as well. With the name of the picture, my name and the date (the number also if limited edition). If limited edition my signature also includes the number out of number, on the matt I also put the name of the image in pencil as well as the number when it is limited edition. My limited editions are used for Charity Auctions and this format seems to get the best prices. I also keep records of all LE's and who they were donated to.

Gldiana -
The believe the question involved matting/framing your OWN print. Is the print being sold with or without a mat. It was confusing at first.
