Northern Lights

Postby hw771230 » Wed Mar 07, 2007 1:18 am

New to the forum

I live in Alaska and take a good number of northern lights pictures in the winter. Although they have been steadily getting better the results are not consistent. I get a lot of noise sometimes. The best results so far are around full moon.

Any ideas?

Look in archives in this magazine and others for articles. Good luck

This is one of the better ones. I have not done much to it just levels and a curve to bring up the shadows. I also did a strong noise reduction in the sky with a layer mask.

Oh, guess I'll tell you I took this with a Nikon D70 and Sigma 28-80 f/3.5
The lens is probably a better paperweight, but I am on an extreme budget.

This one was shot at ISO 400 w/ 20sec. exp. I have tried using 200 but the exposure time is too long and I end up with a big green blur. I always use NR if the exposure is more that 1 sec. it is worth the wait.

Thanks I will be posting more pics on this and the wildlife sections

I really liked the picture. I thought the greens matched up real well with the pine trees. I look forward to more.

Here is another one. I call it a winter rainbow. I have a summer shot exactly same perspective but w/ sun and rainbow. This was taken the next night with the same lens and settings. The blue cast is from the neighbor's predator light.
