Photography Assignments

Postby Photography~girl~ » Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:46 am

Okay. My school starts...sometime after labor day(i am in no hurry to start back up ) And, as most of you know, one of my "classes" is going to be photography. I am doing the indepth study on light(first 2-3weeks of school will be the basics of light and reflection. then i am going to get "The Photographers Guide to Light")
Well my mom would like(and so would I) to have actuall assignments with my photography. Since mom(or dad) doesn't know much about this area, they can't really give me to many assignments. Mom did give me the assignment of "macro"(she wanted flower pics in the living room. haha) But that's about it. lol.
So I thought i'd ask you guys what are some good assignments(specific please. (: ) Its going to be winter soon, so a lot will have to be indoor stuff, but i've got atleast 2 or 3months(i hope) of fall to live with. I would like it to be stuff i can do around the house, since i can't drive yet, and most the "nature places"(aka middle of no where) mom and dad don't want me to go by myself. I remember a few months back Bob told me to use AV mode and learn my depth of field - wow that helped me TONS!
So I was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas(doesn't have to be A LOT). i am thinking about doing one assignment per week, then show you guys my shots of that assignment - from there i can decide if i need to keep doing that "assignment" or move on to the next one.
Thanks so much!

A.K.,

I think once you start going through the book, you'll find lots of different lighting situations to try for experiments. The book covers indoor as well as outdoor lighting so you should still be covered through the winter. The author uses strobes and reflectors for many of the indoor setups, but you can get by without the strobes. You can normally pick up foamcor boards at your local hobby shop to use as reflectors and they are cheap. I bought some that are probably 24 x 30 or larger for less than $5. If you don't have one yet, I'd also suggest you pick up a grey card. Those are also cheap and will help you set your white balance when you study the colors of light.

There is a section that covers outdoor photography and you might want to skip forward to make sure you cover that section before winter arrives in your area. The indoor lilghting topic is near the back of the book, so you'll probably be covering that topic during the winter.

If you need any help once you start the course, you know we're all happy to help.
