Actually no, it's not for crop advantage, a cropped image from the 5D Mark II is as sharp as a non cropped image from the 50D. I do it for speed.
The 50D, it's twice as fast as the 5D Mark II and the 7D is even faster (8fps vs 3.6fps). I'm often published in ski magazines and I need to shoot an entire sequence with the highest number of frames.
