depth of field using a 2X teleconverter

Ever wanted to ask a professional how they approach the landscape or wildlife or how they set up their camera for great photographs? What about asking what kind of gear the pro uses and why? Well here's your chance.

depth of field using a 2X teleconverter

I seem to get better depth of field shooting macro using my fifty mm at f22 on my 2X teleconverter than I do with my ninety mm lens at f22 and no teleconverter. Is this true or is this misperception.

The 50mm with a 2x would become a 100mm and a 100mm should have less DOF than a 90mm at the same distance from the subject (assuming the same camera and aperture were used). Here's a link to a DOF calculator to allow you to play with the numbers: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Hope this helps and Welcome to the Forum!

The question comes down to, does a lens on a two X teleconverter have the depth of field of the native lens or the resultant focal length of the two combined. Some have told me that it is the lens itself as it is the one doing the focusing and others have told me, as you implied, that it is the combination. I was looking for an authoritative answer as the basis for selecting which to use.

The 50 @ f22 with a 2X becomes a 100mm @ f45, which will give you greater DOF than the 90 @ f22.
