Basic Books???

Postby DianaT » Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:30 pm

Hi,

I have never taken any type of photography class, and can't do so at time time (most of our time is spent in Baja), I would appreciate some suggestions for some very basic photography books---ones written for the beginner. I am not, right now, focused on any one type of photography, so I am looking for more general type of information.

I have the Scott Kelby books, and I really enjoy them, but I am looking for more. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Diane

Diane,

One of my favorite photography authors is John Shaw. I won't recommend a specific book since you said you're not looking for anything specific, but take a look at some of his work and pick one that appeals to you. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Of course, O.P.'s Moose Peterson has some good books too if you're wanting to concentrate on outdoor photography.

Dianne,
I agree. Shaw is outstanding. Pick an afternoon or evening, go to your local bookseller and browse the Art section. Grab the titles that look good to you. Buy a latte and really take the time to get a feel for each book. Go thru your "keeper" stack again. Buy what you can or list what you want if you can't justify the 100% retail markup.
Check out Amazon. The reader book reviews are very helpful. Don't feel too bad, the bookstore made a killing on the latte and will likely get a cut off the back-end. The Author still gets his/her full slice.

I'll second or third the recommendation on John Shaw.
His "Landscape Photography" is excellent and has excellent how-to advice.
The subtitle says "Professional Techniques for Shooting Spectacular Scenes", but you don't need to be a professional to understand his writing.
He is very straightforward and not jargon-laden.
First chapter on exposure is a must-read.
He may have updated for digital. My copy is a 1994 and is 'pre-digital'.

For photography books overall, my absolute favorite, without question, is Galen Rowell's "Mountain Light".
If you can find it, get it.

For the basics of exposure, have a look at.
Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Peterson.
ISBN-10: 0817437126
or
ISBN-13: 978-0817437121

Hope this helps.
