I've read mostly good reviews on the Nikon. The reviews of the Tamron are mixed - some not so good. Is the Nikon worth the extra $200?
tadg- I use this lens a lot- I have heard unfavorable reports, but I have none -- I do not use third market lenses on my Nikons, but I have found results remain a lot longer the the spending a few bucks more-- You could very well gain a bit with the 270-- I cannot say-- maybe it would depend on the camera?

Here is a recent photo with mine-- I could of cropped out the lower shadow but it just wasn't that important in this case. As it stands, this photo made the local news and paper, just as you see it. As close as I was to my neighbors house, nothing else would of worked-- flash was defused -- no one hurt, but home totaled--- the 18-200 pretty much stays on my D 80 these days--
