Is the second lens a 17-55 f/2.8IS? Also, which speedlite do you have and do you have a diffuser for it?
If you have a diffuser (I use a Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce for my 580), you can get by without bouncing the flash off a wall or ceiling. Are you familiar with the power settings on your flash?
By using a diffuser and adjusting the power of the flash, your images don't have to look like they were shot with a P&S camera.
Here's a shot I took of one of my granddaughter's on Christmas using the 17-55 with a flash and the diffuser:
You could get a stand and umbrella to use with your flash, but I think you'd rather be mobile in the situation you described.
When taking pics at the outdoor pavilion, you may have a problem with your white balance because of the overhead lights.
I'd shoot those shots in RAW or carry a gray card to adjust the balance before shooting.
Your flash should override the outdoor lights, but if you reduce it's power enough to allow for the ambient light, you may get a color cast.
I don't know if you have a light meter, but I think it would be very helpful shooting in those locations. Of course, if you don't have one, you can just take a lot of shots and keep checking your histogram till you get it right.
