I would suspect it to be your video card more so then the monitor. If you know any one that has a spare monitor hook it up and see if it does the same thing. If it does then it is almost deffenetly your video card. If it doesn't then you will know that it is your monitor.

I would guess it your monitor, mine went dead about 4 months ago (same problem you have) and my other works just fine.
Though, i have never heard of one going out that fast..
