back-ups

I'm writing to get ideas for backing up my work.
Currently I use iphoto (I have Aperture, but not comfortable with it yet), have the iphoto library on my imac, which gets backed up with time machine to an external drive.

I have an additional external drive I'd like to store my photos on (to get them off my imac) and have time machine back up that also. Is there a way to use the external drive for my iphoto library, and have time machine back up both the imac and the iphoto drive?

Also- since I should start using Aperture, and just take the dive in, can I move all my iphoto images into an Aperture library?

I'm not sure about the exteranl back up with Time Machine. But I also use a Mac and Apature and yes you can import your whole iPhoto libray into Apature.
