Dumb question: Can you install software program to ext HD?

Postby Matt » Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:05 pm

I just got Photoshop Elements 6 and a Ext HD. Can I run the PSE from the external hard drive as opposed to installing it on my laptops internal HD?

Matt,

I am pretty sure you can't install programs to ext. hard drives. I know of a couple of people who have tried unsuccessfully. I use my ext. drives for storage and backup only.

Most programs ask where you want to install them. They will default to C:\program files\????, but will allow you to change it. I normally do install software on my "C" drive, but have some installed on my "D" drive. I don't have PS Elements, but I suspect it gives you the option to change the default installation directory.

Hi Caleb,

you can most definitely install software on external drives in Windows, the OS doesn't make a difference unless he sees them as "removable" such as memory cards and thumb drives.

Luca,

Thanks for the clarification. I only know of others unsuccessful attempts. I have not tried.

Matt,

just to be clear... in Windows you can install Photoshop Elements (or any other program) on an external hard drive, but keep in mind that that damn dinosaurs uses the registry for finding its files (don't get me started on all that m$ crap) therefore you can only use the software in the external hard drive with the computer that originally installed it. If you were thinking of installing externally so to be able to use it on a different computer then tough luck! I could do that on my Amiga 20 years ago, M$ still hasn't figured that one out.
