Canon wide angle

I have been checking out this forum for quite a while and finally signed up so I could get in on the action . I received a Digital Rebel XT a year or so ago and have been slowly learning all the ins and outs of the DSLR. After many years of point and shoots its amazing what you can get with DSLR's. I started off with a f/1.8 50mm lens and recently bought a 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 and some other accessories including a set of diopters for macro shots. Now it's time for a wide angle and I'm hoping you guys and gals can give me some input. I am a college student so I don't have the biggest budget and was hoping to get a decent entry level that could get me through school until I have some money to upgrade. When I initially got the camera it didn't come with the normal kit lens 18-55mm and that one doesn't have the best reviews but I did notice there is a new USM 18-55mm. The three that I have been looking at are the f/3.5-5.6 18-55mm USM, the f/2.8 28mm, and the f/2.8 24mm. Does anyone have any experience with either of these or are there any others that I may be interested in? I was hoping to get something near 20mm for landscape and group portraits. I purchased the Canon EF-S 10-22mm (around $650) a year and a half ago and it's by far the lens I use the most. When buying a wide angle lens, keep in mind the crop factor of your camera: an 18mm lens is really a 29mm and a 24mm is the equivalent of 38.4mm film (or full frame sensor).
38mm is not exactly what I call a wide angle.
On amazon I'm seeing the Tokina Fisheye 10-17mm zoom (the only zoom fisheye) for less than $500, for that price you get a fisheye (with the typical fun barrel distortion) and a superwide angle with less distortion, more similar to the 22mm side of the Canon 10-22mm.
I actually want it too, wish I could buy everything I want. lol

I have a Canon 10-22, but that may be more that you want to spend ($685). Tokina has a 12-24 and Sigma has a 10-20 for around $470. Both of these get good reviews.

Sigma also has the 30 f/1.4 that gets good reviews and sells for around $400. It's just not as wide as the zooms.

I have the wide angle listed in my siggy below. It is my most used lens and the only true wide angle that I have experience with. I love LOVE love it! It's right around $700.00 or so. It may have gone down some since I bought mine.

Hey Sean, welcome to the forum, nice shots.

I dont have any of the Canon wide angles, as I usually cant afford them. But I have a few Sigmas and I'm very happy with them. I have both the 17-35 f/2.8-4 and the 24-70 f/2.8. They both are great lenses, very fast and half the price of the 10-22 Canon.

I used to have the Tamron 28-210 f/3.5-5.6 but didnt like it too much because of the slow focus and the fact that it had a 6 foot minimum focusing distnace I sold it as a package with a Digital Rebel so I could move up to the 30D and the wider faster Sigma.

You also might want to checkout a few of the lenes that offer both wide and tele-photo as they make for great walk around lenses. We have a Canon 28-105 that is very small and great for when you dont want to draw any attention to your camera. Say in a museum, or in a busy public setting. Put one of those big lenses on and it's impossible to walk around without everyone commenting on the size of your outfit.

Thanks for all the suggestions I looked over all of the lenses and think the Sigma 10-20mm is probably my best bet. Now I just have to get the money .

I just bought a Tamron 11-18mm , for my XTi, off Ebay and can't wait to go on a trip with it. It got good reviews and seems to look nice on my test shots. I love Tamrons for picture quality w/o breaking the bank.
