Yukon Quest Start

Hey all,

The cold spell broke here, but not until after the start of the Yukon Quest dog sled race, a 1,000 mile dog sled race. I went out Saturday to get some shots of the race start. It was -30 but it didn't keep the crowd away.



Here is a photo of the crowd across the bridge, and stretching off into the ice fog on the Chena River where the race starts, on even years, in downtown Fairbanks, AK



Here is a photo of the last two dogs in line (wheel position) and the sled going by.



Just a shot of an entire team. They are allowed to run up to 14 dogs.

All shots with my D70 and Sigma 18-50/2.8 at 18mm or so.

I cant believe your camera would even work in that temperature!

Pat,

The camera works just fine, even much colder, it's the fingers you have to watch out for. I use really big mittens with hand heaters in them to reheat my hands after a couple shots.

Saturday I coud get about 20-25 shots before the battery would get too cold, then I just took it out and put it in an inside pocket for a bit.

You wouldn't believe the ammount of Cannon ""L" glass running around there. It was a bit like a camera club meeting.

I wear thin gloves inside bigger gloves, so when I shoot I'm still wearing a layer, thin but better than bare hands.

Caleb, are you going to be able to go to the Ididarod in a few weeks? Oh, what I would give to go!

Sorry for the delayed reply. I am currently in Australia, with limited internet access. I am going to miss the Iditarod, but have seen it in the past. I'm glad you like the photos, I love taking photos of the dogs and mushing.
