Raw Files in Photoshop Elements

Postby B9th » Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:52 pm

Does anyone know if Photoshop Elements 6.0 will process RAW files from a Canon EOS 40D? I have Photoshop Elements 4.0 and it will process the RAW files from my Canon Rebel XT, however it will not process RAW Files from the 40D. I was thinking about upgrading to 6.0 but wanted to know this first. Thanks

Here's a link showing RAW product support:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, the only thing I could find is upgrade for Premeire Elements 4.0, which does not help me out. The web site is down as far as contacting customer suppor, so I will try tomorrow. Thanks

It does show that P.E.6 supports the 40D file format.

I had the same problem with CS2 when I got my 30D and just needed to get a update for it to be able to process.

You might want to try to go to the Adobe website and see if they offer an update for the 40D like they did for the 30D? Just a thought

I know this thread is a couple of weeks old now, but for the sake of posterity...and anyone who searches threads looking for this kind of info, I have a quick $.02 worth to add...

I don't know if this applies to Elements or not, but with Photoshop (such as CS2) if your camera isn't supported "out of the box", usually it's just a matter of downloading the latest Adobe Camera RAW file from their website. Basically the file is one of those ".8bi" files like the PS plugins...ya just copy the updated file to the Adobe Common directory (on a Windows machine, it's usually under Program Files). Since Elements is based on Photoshop, I would think it would be the same or similar process.

Adobe Camera RAW, at least when it comes to Photoshop, is the file that contains the actual camera profiles and such...and Adobe is usually pretty good about keeping it updated when new cameras come out.

One quick addendum for those interested... If you ever have to reinstall your Photoshop, say from cleaning your computer due to a virus or spyware or something, you will also have to reinstall the updated Camera RAW file as well as any time you uninstall Photoshop, the new file will be deleted, so keep a copy of it in a separate directory.

Again just a quick $02 worth!
Peace,
Jim

B9th,

the answer to your question is yes. I'm surprised no one else was able to give you a quick answer. You find everything you need on adobe.com under "productst"
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3611

You can also download a full trial version of Elements 6 and see if you like it.

I'm having problems opening up NEF (RAW) files in Photoshop Elements 7. Is there a download or plug-in i need for this, if yes where can i download this from? I have no problems with JPEG files

Susan...you may wish to take a closer look at thread dates...the last post in this one was in March of 2008. That said, you're actually using an older version of Elements there as they are currently in version 10. As such, you may or may not be able to find updated files for your Nikon RAW files...I really don't know if Adobe supports products that old. Either way, your best bet is to check out Adobe's website...if there are updates for version 7 available, that's where they'd be.

Good Luck,
Jim
