South Texas

Postby samchadwick » Fri Apr 25, 2008 6:11 pm

Hello again everyone.

If you get a chance to travel to South Texas (or Texico as they nickname it there), then you certainly should. I had no idea that it was one of the top birding locations in North America. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

I spent 5 days there with a Canon 500mm f/4 (which I rented from lensrentals.com) + a 1.4x extender (that's me with the big gun below).

Here are my favourite 23 images (from about 1000!).

Enjoy.

Beautiful shots as always Sam.

It's amazing how that big lens made the DOF just right out with most of the images.

I'd have to say that the Jack Rabbit, the Owl and the Sunflower shots were my favorite, but it was hard to pick because of how nicely done all of them were.

Obviously the lens was to your liking? We're in Southern California right now and Calumet offers a lens rental program that I was thinking about trying out. This is something that is next to impossible to do in the Mid-West where we used to live

Sam,

All I have to say is WOW! OK, there's more. Very interesting composition with the gulls (having the back one in focus) I like it. I also really like the sunflower shot. It must have been a great time, and a good workout lugging that baby around.

I ought to mention that lensrentals.com shipped the lens (and tripod and wimberley mount) to Texas directly. This was great as there no way I was going to get it on the plane with me from NYC. Then at the end of the week, I put it back in the box and sent it back to them before I flew off. It was pretty easy and they were very helpful throughout.

Glad you like the photos and thanks for the comments!
