The Milky Way

Postby tbswen » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:12 pm

Hello all,

First time post on this forum, hopefully many more to come.

I finally upgraded to the Canon T3 from the XSi only for the fact that it is able to go upto ISO 6400.

Here is the resulting photo, playing around of the RAW file was needed to bring out the milky way.

Details: Canon T3, Sigma Ultrawide 24mm @ f/2.8 ISO 6400
RAW image was edited in Photoshop CS5, noise was cleaned up in Neat Image

Comments welcome

Nice shot. How long was the exposure?

I love this photo. Could you tell me what settings you used on the T3? Thanks!

Nice shot, I like the sloping composition. It adds an unusual angle to the shot.

I'm guessing on the specifics but typically on a wide angle (to get the Milky Way) anything more than about 15 to 30 seconds starts to have serious blur. The more zoom you use (on the wide angle) the more the blur.

Just a guess since only the photographer can tell you for sure.

Thank you all for the kind words.

The camera settings were as follows:
Canon T3, Sigma Ultrawide 24mm
f/2.8
ISO 6400
Exposure was 14 seconds.

It was pure luck to get the shot with that lens because it gives an error on the Digital bodies. However as long as the cameras aperture setting matches what the lens is already set to, it works fine, so I had a small screwdriver with me, and my girlfriend was holding a flash light while i removed the three screws that hold the mount to the lens, then i used the screwdriver to move the aperture gears to open it wide to 2.8, then reassembled the lens. The hardest part was not losing the screws in the darkness

Great job Travis!
I want to do something similar with the Moai of Easter Island on the foreground, if I'll ever get down there.
