Canon 5D Mark II rumors (It's getting closer)

Postby gldiana » Wed May 07, 2008 8:47 pm

Take all this with a large grain of salt, but rumors seem to be quite persistent that the new 5D will be coming out in early summer. It seems that, almost ready, it was redesigned to be upped a bit and that explains the delay in its release.
Some numbers (remembers, it's just rumors):

- 15.3 (or maybe 16.7) Megapixels (full frame sensor, of course)
- 6 fps
- Dual Digic III processors with supposedly the best Noise Reduction in the market (including 3rd party software)
- AF system with 29 points (12 cross type for f/2.8 or faster)
- Weather Sealing same as 1Ds Mark III (there you go Pat, now you can play in the desert wind, lol)
- LiveView
- ISO 12800 (25600 in extended mode)

Price: $3499 ($500 cheaper than the 5D when it was released, and almost the same price of my Minolta Maxxum 9Xi with 28-105 back in 1992).

Well since I'm only 4 days into owning the 5D, I'd say that being able to talk Cindy into letting me upgrade it already would be like handing her a gun and saying "Point this at my eye socket and pull the trigger"

Now I will say that I absolutely love my new 5D, and the few gripes that I have with it would all be fixed if those rumors are true.

My old 1D was able to shoot 8 fps!! It was weather sealed, and had a huge AF System.

6fps would be fantastic, live view would even be better, and an ISO that high would be like shooting with the high end video cameras that can shoot in almost total darkness

You've got me drooling Luca, thanks for giving me something to strive towards. I had to promise Cindy that with this new purchase I would pay for it this summer with photography sales.

Just got a phone call today that I won a contest I had forgot I had submitted images to, then got a publication from Mexico that used a few of our shots of the flying Mobulas in their newspaper. So I'm off to a good start already :D

Luca,

What happened to the vote for "I already have a pile of Nikon gear, and would likely be single if I mentioned I was buying a new camera, and also am going to have to replace all my glass". Just kidding. It sounds like a very sweet camera. I'm working towards getting a D300 if I ever stop buying lenses and other stuff.

Well...I would guess the rumors are true because it's very possible I'm going to be buying a 5D soon and so far with 3 of my 4 digitals, brand new models came out just after I bought them. When I got my Olympus C-4000, the C-5000 came out the same month and the Sony H2's came out like 2 months after I got my H1. The Rebel XTi's were already out when I got my XT, but that was a money thing. So yea...if I get the 5D, you can bet the Mark II will be out soon afterwards.

Peace,
Jim

Well, Jim, the 5D came out 2 years ago so I guess you waited too long. haha
Actually I think this is a good time to buy a 5D since the price has dropped so much.

BTW, the price of the 5D at Circuit City is $700 more than most online retails but if you have a local dealer that sells it for less, Circuit City will match the price plus an extra 10% discount which is at least $200. Keep that in mind.

BTW, where have you been? You've been quiet lately.

I just bought my 5D off POTN website with only 1800 acuations on it.

It came with a grip, grid installed on the sensor, a extreme 3 2gig card and the receipt that the guy had paid $3000 3 months ago.

I got it for $1900 and absolutely love it! Dont buy brand new as there are too many good deals on the internet. Lightly used is the way to go. Even if I had to send the thing back to Canon for a overhaul, I'd still be less than buying new

Go for it Walscak! You'll not regret it!

Not the Circuit City in my area...they only do "price matching" with local stores...and I mean -local-...as in within 5 miles of their store. They wouldn't even match a hard drive price for me with Microcenter's on the other side of Cleveland. I did contact their corporate offices about this since they do advertise the price matching, but I never got a reply from them.

Just for the record, 2 years ago my wife was still dealing with cancer so getting a $3000 camera at that point -never- would have happened. Even if we had of hit the lottery or something, all of our money was going into my wife's medical care. The only reason I'm even considering one now is that I may have a workman's comp settlement coming in within the next couple of months, otherwise I'd just be trying to get a couple more lenses for the XT. I'm actually looking at a refurb'd 5D with Canon warranty online for $1700 so if the comp check does come in, that's what I'm going to get. At this point I think I'll get more out of the new camera than I will new lenses.

What can I say...being poor sucks :(

BTW, where have you been? You've been quiet lately.

Doing "trade for portfolio" work with human subjects mostly...which is why I haven't posted anything here in a bit...no scenics or critter shots except those I just put up over the last couple of days. I'm not getting much money out of it, but it's keeping me pretty busy. I also picked up a couple of small monolights and my first softbox so I've been trying to learn how to use them and such. I'm trying to gear up to start doing some "on site" portfolio work...maybe start getting some cash coming in at some point.

Peace,
Jim

Jim,

I emailed customer service from their website and they told me they have a policy to match 110% a store price in your town. Maybe you should bring this to the attention of the store there.

And back to 5D topic... the price has dropped again on Amazon.com it is now $1999.99 body only and $2599.99 with 24-105 f/4 L. So half the price for that lens, which I could easily sell in Europe for $1500 or around there.

The 40D has dropped on Amazon.com to $999.99

Sign that the new 5D is really close.

Hey Luca,
Either way with Circuit City, I probably won't be able to get a refurb'd camera there and I'm sure the refurb is going to be cheaper in any case.

I have been looking at the 40D's but I really want to go into the full frame sensor and from everything I've been reading (so far at least), the 5D still has superior performance compared with the 40D in low light...which is what I'm really after. From most of what I've been reading, the original 5D out performs the 40D in most areas except for the auto focus performance and even that's supposed to be pretty close. Either way it'll still be better than my XT I'm sure! LOL!!!

I'm not really worried about the lenses at this point either...that's something I'll deal with down the road. Even here I'm pretty sure the 5D is going to do better with my cheap lenses than my XT would do with L glass as far as image quality is concerned. Even at ISO 3200 the 5D will probably produce better images with my Tamrons than my XT would at ISO 400 with an f/2.8 L lens...just the difference between the sensors.

Okies...back to processing pictures! LOL!
Peace,
Jim

Hey Jim, stick with the free stuff before you start charging for your work. I havent seen any of your modeling stuff, but I know I probably gave up a years worth of free photoshoots before I ever thought to charge someone for my work.

In that year I experimented with so many different lighting ideas and different lens combinations, I thought I was going to go crazy. I still get nervous when I shoot models as they can talk back, and landscapes, no matter how bad you butcher them, say nothing :D

That is probably the one reason why top model photographers get paid 100x's what top landscape photographers do....LOL

Back to the 5D, I'll say it again, I love the full frame and even went to using one of my Canon non-L lenses just for the heck of it as the image quality is completely different from my older 1D or Cindy's 30D.

This weekend I was exploring Mines in Death Valley and had to use her 30D for the flash and was hating it because of the crop factor. Once you go full frame, it's very hard to go back.
