slideshow on website

Postby Southern Wolf » Sun Jun 08, 2008 6:09 pm

I would like to install a slideshow on my website... that way when you click a link the slide show starts up in a new window.

Any ideas of how to achieve this?

You must use Javascript or Flash (I strongly discourage this last one).
Best bet to find a script go to Google and search slideshow javascript and you're bound to find tons. In most cases you'll just have to replace their file name with yours and point at the location where the photos are stored.
Make sure not to use too large photos or visitors to your side will get annoyed by the wait and will click away (I tend to do that as soon as I smell Flash). Plus, with JS it's easier to edit it later if you want to change photos and Flash will not work on browser without the plugin installed.

Here, found one for you:

And a great tutorial to create your own:

I agree javascript. Flash has a built-in action but it puts a control panel inside your image. I am thinking about doing a 3D type thing with a plug-in called Piclens. It makes a wall of images that you can stop and enlarge any image. Maybe someone has tried that in this forum. I would be uninterested as to what they have to say.

wow... gotta learn another language... again.

Question. Its talking about pre loading the images in cache. I kinda understand that part. I will prob have 10-15 images rotating. Can you put the <head> on another page also to help speed up the preload... or does it reload when you go to the actual slideshow page?

Im kinda lost... but can prob figure it out with time.

John,

careful with implementing non-standard plugins, you will lose 99% of your visitors.

You're welcome, Kevin.

I think once the images are preloaded they will stay in the cache of the browser until they are flushed, even if on a different page.

I took a look at Piclens today and it works very well both if the plug-in is installed and not installed. If it is not installed you get a flash slide show and if the browser has the plug-in you get the 3D show. I was impressed. As far as pre-loading images no need it works with thumbnails and seamlessly switches to the larger image. Also they have a program that will build your page for you but looking at the code it is easy to hard code it yourself. One note you will need to load it to the www to test. I have my test on my work home page in a test folder but if you like when I get several images made and loaded I will give you a link to the file. :)
