July is Bike Month!

Postby Pokie » Thu Jul 24, 2008 7:47 pm

No, not Harleys, but Treks and Cannondales and Giants and ...

In honor of le Tour de France, here are some pictures of the Tour de Georgia from past years.
The photos were rather ordinary - wait half an hour and then have 12 seconds to take pictures of 125 bikers racing by at 35 mph.
Need to stake out good positions first. Hard to make it up on the spot.

I tried to jazz the photos up a bit - maybe should post under digital darkroom, but here they are after a few blurs, smears, skews, pallet knives and the like.

Being big time into Biking, I've loved shooting bikes and their riders. One thing I've never done is cover a road bike event. I really like what you did with the Photochop techniques.

I'll have to dig through some of my past stuff to see if I can find any good shots

I'll also have to make notes on your techniques as I think that would be a great way to save a rather boring shot, or one that might be a tad out of focus. That seems to be the norm with many of mine as it's always hard to tack sharp shots when it comes to the fast action

This is probably one of my favorite shots as all my buddies used to brag that Cindy was the Best Wife Ever because my mountain bike hung on the rack in our bedroom and she didnt mind. I should also say that our bedroom had a sliding glass doorwall that opened up to the back yard, and when we lived in Florida, I almost never drove my Bronco, only rode the bike due to the heavy traffic. So I'd just ride right up to the back door of the bedroom and hang it on the rack before I jumped in the shower.

This would be something that I'd have hung in my garage!!

Since the month is almost over, I thought I'd add a few images to the thread since it's one of my favorite subjects

After looking at these, I realize I like the low angles :D I also love things that show motion, so slow shutter speeds help alot here

Pat,

I like the low angle, but I love the tent pic.

Pat,
I'm a straight roadie - never done any mountain biking, unless you consider some of the 'roads' where I used to live in WVa,
and only riden in two events. Very few riders and little organized bike activity in the immediate vicinity, and few opportunities to shoot.
I've done more riding than clicking, but have backed off the riding since I tore up my knee last year.
I've lost about 3 mph and a lot of endurance. I'm trying to build back up, but it's not happening quickly.
Did 18 miles yesterday. There's a sunflower field a couple miles past where I could get to. I wanted to shoot some pics.
I guess I'll have to drive to it.
Thinking about riding today, but it's pushing 95 deg and I need a siesta.
I'll post a couple of the "before" versions of the photoshop-enhanced pictures later.
Dont' expect much - they were definitely salvaged from what should have been outtakes.
Take care,
Pokie

Pat,
That tent picture is hilarious, you should submit it to some bike mags.

And I have to tell you, I laughed out loud when I read your post, because you wrote "doorwall." My husband is from Michigan and always says doorwall, for which I give him endless amounts of crap, as we in the PNW call it a sliding glass door. ;-)
