Weekly Assignment 8: TIME LAPSE

Postby gldiana » Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:35 pm

Since no one jumped in... I think the assignment should be posted to the General Discussion board from now one, since it doesn't necessarily have to be landscape.
Well, I wanted to pick something difficult, something they'll get us out and think, or even think and then get us out.
How do you capture time? There's more to it than a slow motion shot of a waterfall... let's see who's going to be the most creative mind. Remember: ONLY new shots, this is an assignment, you're being sent out in the field with a blank memory card.
Old shots are welcome in a separate thread.

Since this task started late and it's a little more difficult, let's make the deadline Sunday 21st.
Because of the technicality of this assignment, if anyone feels they have used an original tecnique (for example something involving more than one photo... <hint>) feel free to explain how you did it so that we can all learn.

Good Luck!

Alllllllllrighty. Due to the fact that my camera can't take a standstill/time photo[like part in blurry and part is in focus] I reallllly had to think. I came up with these, yes I did change the color and did a minor croping[one had like my cat's leg in the background] But that was all the editing I did to them. if you want to see the original photos, please let me know. :)
I look forward to see what you all came up with.

Okay Guys not many runners in this race to date.

Well heres my entries.

Time Lapse, how do we measure time HHmmmmmmm, so I thought way back in time the moon was used as a measure of time and ......

Image

Maybe not its best angle but the best I could achieve in the time frame given.

I also remember as a child blowing seeds off a Dandy Lion would give an indication of what time it was .....

Image

Finally I took a 15 second "Time Lapse" above one of our Motorways one evening .......

Image

Anyway that's my take, open to comments etc and can't wait to see what others have come up with. :D :D

Hi Ed,

I have to be blamed for my lack of attendance but it's been 3 weeks since I touched my camera, today is my 25th consecutive day of work and the little time off I have is going toward the preparation for the show.
All your photos here are beautiful, I really like the dandelion, good composition. The third photo, of the highway, is right on topic, that's a good example of time lapse. The other two, although being very nice photos, are off-topic because the photo, per se, does not show any time lapse. Yes, the moon cycles the passing of time, but so does a tree. Now if you had a composite photo with various stages of the moon then it would be perfectly on topic. Does it make sense? In any case, good photos. I have an idea for mine but I have to find time to implement it. I might have to submit after the deadline but at least the assignment got me thinking... (I chose the topic before having any idea).

Hi Luca,

Thanks for the feedback, we have been racking our brains as to "How to show time lapse" sorry if we missed the target. The moon was based on the way time was measured years ago and hence forms the basis of our months and calendars, I suppose several combined shots at different stages of the moon would of been effective. I'll try harder next time !!!!!

I was thinking of doing something and combining images but I really need more experience in photoshop first. Still working my way through the manuals.

Look forward to seeing your images, should you have time to submit them.

Mr F thank you too for your comments.

Your KodakZ712is camera should allow you to shoot a shot like this in various ways. It allows you to set the shutter speed - so you could set it for an extended period (I don't know the max setting) or you could shoot using manual settings and close the aperture and once again, extend the shutter speed. It also seems to have a "night landscape" setting that may give you similar results. I don't have this camera, but did find a review of it here:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/kodak/z712is-review/

Your other cameras may have similar settings. The 3 things you want to do are use a small ISO setting, a small aperture setting (large number like f/22 or f/32) and a slow shutter speed. Some cameras also allow you to hold the shutter open for however long you want and may have a separte setting for that - on my Canon 30D it's called "bulb". You'll also need a tripod (or some other way to stabilize the camera) and either use a remote shutter release or a time release so you don't shake the camera.

Hope this helps.

Hey Ed,
yeah it's a particularly demanding assignment. I have something in mind that has to do with flowers but I need time and the right conditions...

Thanks Bob ! That was very imformative - I will try it out when I get some time off from work . I do have a small tripod that is marketed for scopes & binoculars but seems to work fine with my cameras too - as long as you don't need it to be higher than 9 inches ...

Hi Luca,

Look forward to seeing those, even if it falls outside the given time frame.

At least these projects have got me out and about using the camera in all sorts of different conditions.

I've got two views of time-lapse here.
In a way they're opposites.
Like photography~girl, I've got a collection of objects representing different eras to show the passage of time.
In the second, I've got a single subject flowing through time.
I took more time to set up the first, so let it be the "official" entry.
I did this with my 'homemade lensbaby' - I take a wide angle lens, hold it backwards and tilted slightly, against the primary lens.
By changing the distance, tilt, and shift, I can move the blur. Usually takes some cropping due to the smaller image area.
The resolution is lousy and I wish I could get a sharp focus in at least one spot in the center, but I think it kinda works in this picture.
It gives me the feeling of looking through a time-tunnel with the older objects in poorer focus.
I tried to give it a slight sepia tone to again enhance the feeling of time.

When things don't go your way...

The original topic was,"how do you capture time?"
My plan was to use my snazzy new remote trigger, set up our vintage clock, set up my camera on a tripod and let time pass.

I did all of the above, but something went awry: I over-exposed the shot and in the process made the minute-hand all but disappear. You can still see a faint swirl from the second-hand, but you have to REALLY look.

I was really disappointed at first, but after some time spent "tweaking" and playing with it, I decided this was a much cooler shot than my initial idea.

Now, time is but an illusion, you can see a shadow of a minute hand, but it's fading away...as is time.

Image

By the way, Edd, that motorway shot is great!!
