Do like me, get both ;-)
Seriously, it's time for me to move to full frame field. I have used a 5D before and many friends have it and a CMOS doesn't cut it anymore for where I'm going (not entirely, there's still room for it, though) and its superiority in light capture makes it my body of choice (along with the Nikon D3, but I'm not going to spend $5000 for a body without having any lens, plus Canon is 4 years ahead in full-frame sensor manufacturing and nobody can tell me that it doesn't make a difference in the know-how. Other than that the D3 is too bulky, not a good travel camera, I already struggle carrying 30D and lenses and tripod around the world). The new 5D is light years ahead of the old 5D in terms of light sensitivity and noise (I'm basing this on the words of a friend who tested the 50D for Canon, and I saw those photos, so if the 50D has such great results in terms of noise the 5D will be the same or better. Considering it's a full frame I go with better).
On the other hand, I love the 10-22mm lens too much to drop it so I'm also getting a 50D. I outgrew the 30D about a year ago, time for change. According to some stores the 50D will be released on October 6th. Today Canon put the prices on their site for the 5D MkII ($2,699)and G10 ($499, same as the G9) so now the prices are official. I'm expecting the 5D to be available around the same date. Anybody wants to buy a 30D? LOL

Bob, sorry for the confusion, the center point is cross-type, not the rest. Works for me.
Since I shoot everything in terms of hyper-focal distance, I only use the center point.

Ed,
to make it short a cross-type sensor is capable of detecting both horizontal and vertical lines.

Full info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autofocus

Search for cross-type within the page.

A few minor features of the 5D MkII that I just noticed:

- images can be locked once taken so as not to delete them accidentally
- in-camera image rotation (finally!)
- Quiet Mode (possibility to take "silent" photos, no shutter click)
- Live Histogram (in Live mode the histogram is updated in real time). Obvious advantage is being able to see if photo will be over/under-exposed before even releasing the shutter.
- Live view with Depth of Field

Luca,

I have a "Protect" option and an "Auto-rotate" option on my 30D. I don't know if they were available 3 years ago when the 5D first came out, but I believe they have been on a number of models since.

LOL
I never notice that on my 30D. One of these days I'll read the manual ;-)

I get image lock and rotation in my D70 from 5 years ago. I assumed all DSLRs had that :?

Hi Luca,

My 40D has Image rotation, I adjusted it only this morning so photo's aren't automatically rotated. Also have image lock and not 100% but think it may have live histogram as well.

But just like yourself not read that part of the manual as yet so can't be 100% :D :D

Thanks for the link, to the autofocus artical.

Ed

Hi Bob,

None really we bought Body Only.

My Wife had a Canon EOS 300 or 500, can't remember which, so we transported the lenses from that to the new digital.

We have a Tameron 28 - 80mm lense and a Canon 75 - 300mm lenses. Remember you gave me some advice on the Canon lense.

Were very happy with the 40D, seem to be getting some nice shots.
